The Seed, the Bread, and the

Luke 8:9-18 His disciples began questioning Him as to
what this parable meant. (10) And He said, "To you it has
been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of
God, but to the rest it is in parables, so that SEEING THEY
MAY NOT SEE, AND HEARING THEY MAY NOT
UNDERSTAND. (11) "Now the parable is this: the seed is
the word of God. (12) "Those beside the road are those
who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the
word from their heart, so that they will not believe and be
saved. (13) "Those on the rocky soil are those who, when
they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no
firm root; they believe for a while, and in time of
temptation fall away. (14) "The seed which fell among
the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as
they go on their way they are choked with worries and
riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to
maturity. (15) "But the seed in the good soil, these are
the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good
heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance.

The Seed, the Bread, and the
Word
•John 1:1-14 In the beginning was the Word, and
the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (2)
He was in the beginning with God. (3) All things
came into being through Him, and apart from Him
nothing came into being that has come into being.
(4) In Him was life, and the life was the Light of
men. (5) The Light shines in the darkness, and the
darkness did not comprehend it. (6) There came a
man sent from God, whose name was John. (7) He
came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so
that all might believe through him. (8) He was not
the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.
(9) There was the true Light which, coming into the
world, enlightens every man. (10) He was in the
world, and the world was made through Him, and
the world did not know Him. (11) He came to His
own, and those who were His own did not receive

•Revelation 19:11-16 And I saw heaven opened,
and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is
called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He
judges and wages war. (12) His eyes are a flame of
fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has
a name written on Him which no one knows except
Himself. (13) He is clothed with a robe dipped in
blood, and His name is called The Word of God. (14)
And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine
linen, white and clean, were following Him on white
horses. (15) From His mouth comes a sharp sword,
so that with it He may strike down the nations, and
He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads
the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the
Almighty. (16) And on His robe and on His thigh He
has a name written, "KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF

Hearing of the Gospel
•Romans 10:13-17 for "WHOEVER WILL
CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE
SAVED." (14) How then will they call on
Him in whom they have not believed? How
will they believe in Him whom they have
not heard? And how will they hear without
a preacher? (15) How will they preach
unless they are sent? Just as it is written,
"HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE
WHO BRING GOOD NEWS OF GOOD
THINGS!" (16) However, they did not all
heed the good news; for Isaiah says,
"LORD, WHO HAS BELIEVED OUR REPORT?"

Repentance from Sin
•Matthew 3:1-3 Now in those days John the Baptist

(2) "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
(3) For this is the one referred to by Isaiah the
prophet when he said, "THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN
THE WILDERNESS, 'MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE
LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT!'"
•Mark 1:14-15 Now after John had been taken into
custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel
of God, (15) and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the
kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the

knowing this beforehand, be on your guard so
that you are not carried away by the error of
unprincipled men and fall from your own

•As written in the original language, this verb is
an aorist in the durative sense denoting
continual action. Therefore “hear” would be
more accurately translated “hearing”. The same
aorist durative quality applies to “know”,
“follow”, and “give”. So a more accurate
translation of the verse would be:

and to all the people of Israel, that by
the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene,
whom you crucified, whom God raised
from the dead--by this name this man
stands here before you in good health.

Acts
• Acts 5:29-33 But Peter and the apostles
answered, "We must obey God rather

death by hanging Him on a cross. (31)
"He is the one whom God exalted to His
right hand as a Prince and a Savior, to
grant repentance to Israel, and
forgiveness of sins. (32) "And we are
witnesses of these things; and so is the
Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those
who obey Him." (33) But when they
heard this, they were cut to the quick
and intended to kill them.

• Acts 10:36-42 "The word which He sent to the sons of
Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ (He is
Lord of all)-- (37) you yourselves know the thing
which took place throughout all Judea, starting from
Galilee, after the baptism which John proclaimed. (38)
"You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him
with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went
about doing good and healing all who were oppressed
by the devil, for God was with Him. (39) "We are
witnesses of all the things He did both in the land of
the Jews and in Jerusalem. They also put Him to death
by hanging Him on a cross. (40) "God raised Him up
on the third day and granted that He become visible,
(41) not to all the people, but to witnesses who were
chosen beforehand by God, that is, to us who ate and
drank with Him after He arose from the dead. (42)
"And He ordered us to preach to the people, and
solemnly to testify that this is the One who has been
appointed by God as Judge of the living and the dead.

The Gospel Sermons in the Book of
Acts
• Acts 13:23-39 "From the descendants of this man, according to
promise, God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, (24) after John had
proclaimed before His coming a baptism of repentance to all the
people of Israel. (25) "And while John was completing his course, he
kept saying, 'What do you suppose that I am? I am not He. But behold,
one is coming after me the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to
untie.' (26) "Brethren, sons of Abraham's family, and those among
you who fear God, to us the message of this salvation has been sent.
(27) "For those who live in Jerusalem, and their rulers, recognizing
neither Him nor the utterances of the prophets which are read every
Sabbath, fulfilled these by condemning Him. (28) "And though they
found no ground for putting Him to death, they asked Pilate that He be
executed. (29) "When they had carried out all that was written
concerning Him, they took Him down from the cross and laid Him in a
tomb. (30) "But God raised Him from the dead; (31) and for many
days He appeared to those who came up with Him from Galilee to
Jerusalem, the very ones who are now His witnesses to the people.
(32) "And we preach to you the good news of the promise made to the
fathers, (33) that God has fulfilled this promise to our children in that
He raised up Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm, 'YOU ARE
MY SON; TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU.' (34) "As for the fact that He
raised Him up from the dead, no longer to return to decay, He has
spoken in this way: 'I WILL GIVE YOU THE HOLY and SURE blessings OF
DAVID.' (35) "Therefore He also says in another Psalm, 'YOU WILL NOT
ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO UNDERGO DECAY.' (36) "For David, after he
had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep, and

What does the Gospel of
Jesus Christ mean for the
Christian today?

58

• Paul also speaks frequently of Jesus
dying for our sins in his gospel message.
• Some Christians today have difficulty
understanding the implication of this.
• What does Paul think of what Jesus did
for our sins?
• “we died in Him, and were raised in
Him.”
• Jesus removed the barrier between us
and God created by the condition of sin.
• “redeemed by His blood” – He paid the
price to buy us back.
