Innovation in Hats

A hat is a head covering. It can be worn for protection against the


elements, for ceremonial or religious reasons, for safety, or as a fashion accessory. In the past, hats were an indicator of social status.

In the military, they may denote nationality, branch of service, rank


and/or regiment .

In the Middle Ages, hats were a marker of social status and used to single out certain groups.

The 1215 Fourth Council of the Lateran required that all Jews identify themselves by wearing the Judenhat (Jewish hat), marking them as targets for anti-Semitism.

In the first half of the 19th century, women wore bonnets that gradually became larger, decorated with ribbons, flowers, feathers, and gauze trims.
By the end of the century, many other styles were introduced, among them hats with wide brims and flat crowns, the flower pot and the toque. By the middle of the 1920s, when women began to cut their hair short, they chose hats that hugged the head like a helmet.

TOP HAT Late 1700's-1920's There is a famous story that describes the first time a top hat was worn in London; its great height and shiny silk luster incited terror and panic in the streets and earned the owner a 500 fine.

GAUCHO

The traditional Gaucho hats is a felt hat with a wide flat brim, a shallow flat-topped crown and, on most, a wind tie. This hat was the main article of clothing used by Gauchos in the early 19th century to work on the South American ranges.

BOWLER Peak Popularity: Mid 1800's-1930's


Bowler is one of the most recognizable styles of hat from history.

This compact, bubble-shaped hat was created by hat-makers Thom as and William Bowler for William Coke.

KENTUCKY DERBY EVENT HAT


Peak Popularity: late 1800s-present day

Since its beginning in 1875, Kentucky Derby has been one of the main hat fashion events of the season.

THE PORKPIE

Peak Popularity: Mid 1800's-1940's

The Porkpie is primarily recognized as the hat of many Jazz and Blues musicians in New Orleans.

THE OPEN CROWN (SOFT FELT)


Peak Popularity: 1800s-early 1900s

With dress hats of the 19th and early 20th century were typically made of a thick, stiffened felt, the materials matching the formality and style of the time.

THE PANAMA Peak Popularity: 1800's-1960's Panamas are hand woven hats made from the fibers of the toquila palm in Ecuador. Following the establishment of trade routes out of the Isthmus of Panama to North America, Europe and Asia, these hats became known primarily from their point of export, rather than manufacture, and the name has persisted ever since.

THE WESTERN HAT Peak Popularity: 1865-Present Day

While they are associated with Texas, the original Cowboy hats belong to the American West.

THE FASCINATOR

Peak Popularity: mid 1500s-present day

Unlike most hats that are designed to completely cover the top of the head and offer protection from the elements, a fascinator is a hat that was purely used for decoration and tend to sit forward on the head and, if anything, barely cover the crown.

All guests in the Royal Enclosure wear hats. This tradition was
adopted at other horse racing events, such as the Kentucky Derby in the United States.

Peak (British English), or bill, a stiff projection at the front, to shade or shield the eyes from sun and rain. Brim, an optional projection of stiff material from the bottom of the hat's crown horizontally all around the circumference of the hat Puggaree (British) or sweatband or hatband (American), a ribbon or band that runs around the bottom of the torso of the hat. The sweatband may be adjustable with a cord or rope at the top and is on the inside of the hat touching the skin while the hatband and puggaree are around the outside

Colors can signify different roles on construction sites. These color designations will vary from company to company and work site to work site. Government agencies, such as the U.S. Navy, and DOT have their own color scheme for hard hats, which they may apply to subcontractors. On very large projects involving a number of companies, it is sometimes the practice for all the employees of a company to wear the same color hat.
