Note Taking 101

Introduction
Source Cards
 Items that must be included on all source cards.
– 1. Author’s full name.
 Last name, first name.
– 2. Title of book.
 Title must be underlined.
– 3. Place of publication.
 State where it is published. City also, if it is available.
– 4. Publisher Name.
 Include appropriate endings. Ex. Inc., Corp., etc.
– 5. Copyright date.
 The most current year the book is published.

Books with ONE author.
Author’s Last Name, First Name. Name of
Book. Place of publication: Publisher Name, Copyright
date.

Notice the top line is at the edge and the remaining


lines are indented. Use the proper punctuation bet

Books with TWO authors.
Last name of the FIRST author that is listed,
first name and First name and Last name of the
second author that is listed. Title of book. Place:
Publisher, Copyright.

Rochman, Hazel and Darlene Z. McCampbell.


Bearing Witness: Stories of the Holocaust. New
York: Orchard Books, 1995.

Notice the word AND between the two authors


names. If there are more than 2 authors, use the
abbreviations, et al. after the first authors name.

Magazine Articles
Author’s last name, first name. “Title of article.”
Name of magazine. Volume Number (date of
publication), page(s).

Rushin, Steve. “A Double Whammy.” Sports


Illustrated. Volume 103, No. 15 (October 17,
2005), 19.

Notice the title of the article is in quotation marks


with the period. There is a volume number listed
so the date is in parenthesis, otherwise just use
the date of the magazine.

Common Themes
 Always begin with the author or editors
name.
 Title of the book, magazine, etc. is
underlined.
 Article titles are in quotations.
 They all include the copyright date.

 Slug: top line of card, is the topic of the
note card
 Source Number: Upper right corner, it is
circled
 Note is in the middle of the card
 Author’s last name, page number: lower
left hand corner

Notes belong in the middle section. They should be


complete thoughts about the topic of the card and
should not be copied directly from the book. You
should always summarize and paraphrase in your
own words.
