MDS INTRODUCTION

Technical Training 2007

What is a MDS?
Variable Refrigerant Flow System (VRF)
Variable Capacity Multiple Indoors Centralized Air-conditioning system
Technical Training 2007

Why VRF system is developed?

High living standard : Demand higher comfort level Anytime, Anywhere Cooling load increase Prolonged cooling period Comfort but big energy eater High energy cost & environmental concern Facing dilemma

How can we achieve energy saving without sacrificing comfort?

Technical Training 2007

Solution : Individual Air Conditioning

Switch on/off freely

Individual temperature setting and control Independent system

Comfort for everybody
Capacity and Energy consumption change in parallel Do not bother other unit
VRF System is developed!

Technical Training 2007

How Does Digital Scroll Compressor Works?

1. Built based on Copeland Axial Compliance feature/principle - Ensure two scrolls are loaded together with optimal force - Axial Compliance allow 1mm vertical movement

Technical Training 2007

How Does Digital Scroll Compressor Works?

2. Modulation Mechanism

1.0 mm Scroll Separation

Loaded (1) - Full Capacity

Unloaded (0) - Zero Capacity

Technical Training 2007

Loading
PWM valve power off PWM valve close Fixed scroll move downwards & operates as per normal compressor Fixed scroll move in the axial direction to the orbiting scroll until they are very near (very small amounts) Loading

Technical Training 2007

Unloading

PWM valve power on PWM valve open Discharge chamber and suction pipes becomes connected Fixed scroll move upward Two scrolls separated Unloading

Technical Training 2007

How Does Digital Scroll Compressor Works?

3. Concept of Cycle Time = Loaded State Time + Unloaded State Time - Duration of these 2 times determine the capacity modulation of compressor Example: In a 20 second cycle time, if the loaded time and unloaded Time is 10 seconds respectively, the compressor modulation is 50%

Compact Design

Outdoor unit has compact design. The small structure occupy less space and is easy to move.

Technical Training 2007

MDS Product Features

Better Sound Quality
New fan blade design offer smooth air distribution thus reduces turbulent noise significantly. Night Mode Outdoor unit will operate at lower fan speed according to ambient temperature

Optional high static fan of 50Pa is available. (For short ducting)

Technical Training 2007

MDS Product Features

Easier Oil Return
During the unloaded state, since there is no mass velocity of refrigerant, the oil does not leave the compressor. So during a period of low modulation, when the unloaded time is longer, very little oil leaves the compressor Build in oil separator for MDS outdoor models

Other Features
Self Diagnosis for Outdoor and Indoor model. A set of error codes is available. Simple wiring to connect the outdoor and indoor model. Only a twisted part of wire is required to link up the indoor and outdoor.

MDS Application

Technical Training 2007

MDS Application
Consideration for using ADS
Location for outdoor is limited. MDS can be used due to the ability to couple multiple indoors with only 1 outdoor. Better space utilization. Various type of indoor unit with separate temperature requirement MDS system can be couple with various type of indoors. Each indoor can be design to supply to a specific area only and the temperature setting is base on individual indoor setting. Heat load of the same air-conditioned area varies MDS is able to match the indoor load requirement with its part loading capability.

Technical Training 2007

MDS Application
Consideration for using MDS
Centralized Control MDS outdoors and indoors can be linked together and control using the MDS Control & Monitoring Software. The software can also perform scheduling of the indoor units base on the operating duration. Places that require low or no EMC interference The MDS modulation is control by mechanical parts. No change in power supply (frequency or current), thus no EMC interference.

Technical Training 2007

MDS Application
Consideration for using MDS
Building Type: Apartment / Bungalow
Temperature setting varies base on different user Outdoor location is limited

Building Type: Exhibition Hall

Indoor Capacity base on crowd Centralized Control required.

Technical Training 2007

MDS Application
Consideration for using MDS
Building Type: Offices / Restaurant

Scheduling base on office hours / peak hours as load determine by crowd. Building exposed to sunlight changes, causing load requirement changes. Required both centralized control and individual temperature setting EMC interference may

Technical Training 2007

Benefits of MDS

Technical Training 2007

Benefits of MDS
To Property Owner
Economical Supply match indoor demand Short Installation Time Allow floor-to-floor installation. High Adaptability Various indoors models and long piping length. Better Space Utilization Less equipment is required. More space will be available for owner to rent out.

Technical Training 2007

Benefits of MDS
To consultant and building designer
Flexibility in designing 50 meters height - 15-story building. 15 meters between highest to the lowest indoors - 5 stories Floor by Floor installation 50Pa ESP fan allow installation of short ducting.

Technical Training 2007

Benefits of MDS
To consultant and building designer
Easy Installation Less equipment. Smaller and lighter piping. A set of twisted pair wired. Refnet joints The refnet joints (with insulation) reduce the amount of work involved in installation.

MDS versus other centralized air conditioning system

Technical Training 2007

Understand MDS System Features of MDS Energy efficient Tight control with high comfort Centralized air conditioning with zoning capabilities
What does MDS usually compete with?

MDS competes naturally with chillers

Technical Training 2007

Understand MDS System

Can MDS replace Chillers? Depends on application Process cooling Clean room application (more than 2 parameters to control) How to introduce a MDS system? Similar like a chiller system except that it uses refrigerant rather than water, connected to ducted and ductless fan coil unit easily.
