Customer Pain points

BTSs contribute around 90% of overall network power consumption leading to huge OPEX. BCCH always transmits at full power for all channels all the time no power reduction leading to more power consumption & high OPEX. CO2 emission due to BTS power consumption is a major environmental concern

Nokia Siemens Networks

Feature Description
The Energy saving mode for BCCH TRX feature introduces a configurable power saving mode for the BCCH TRX. It aims to achieve lower electricity consumption by reducing the transmit power of the BCCH TRX.

This feature reduces the transmit power level of dummy bursts on idle circuit-switched channels of the BCCH carrier by 2 dB. It also enables 2 dB dynamic power control on active dedicated circuit-switched channels of the BCCH TRX.
Reduced transmit power results in reduced BTS power consumption.

No power reduction for BCCH/CCCH, active GPRS (data) channels, TSL 7 on BCCH TRX

Value proposition (Quantitative/Qualitative)

The reduced electricity consumption due to the Energy saving mode for BCCH TRX
helps operators reduce network operating costs.

Reduced power consumption cuts CO2 emissions. The reduced transmit power of dummy bursts, and the limited dynamic power control
allowed for active CS channels, result in a reduction in downlink interference caused by the BCCH frequency. Average 0.3 to 0.4 KWh of savings per sector per day from field trials. Higher energy efficiency means 2319 metric tons reduced CO2 emissions.
