Laws are the regulations established, and usually
written, by a governing power.

Ethics are the morals of a culture, and often times,
they inform the laws that are made.
Ethics and Law

Differences
Ethics
 Ethics do not have any associated
punishments when broken.

 Ethics comes from people‟s
awareness of what is right and
wrong.

 Ethics are moral codes which every
person must conform to.

 Ethics comes from within a
person‟s moral values.

Law
 Laws carry with them a
punishment for violations.

 Laws are enforced by governments
to its people.

 Laws are codifications of ethics
meant to regulate society.

 Laws are made with ethics as a
guiding principle.

The Muslims started the study of Ethics along with
the study of the Quran.

Ethics in Islam is nothing but the body of injunction
laid down in the Quran for the practical conduct of
life and fully exemplified in the practice of the Holy
Prophet throughout his life.
Islam and Ethics

You are the best nation that has been raised up for
mankind; You enjoin right conduct, forbid evil and
believe in Allah. (3:110)

The Quran reminded man of a
number of basic moral and ethical
values

The Quran addresses the Prophet. “Thou has been
created with an excellent character”

ميظع قلخ ىلعل هناو

The Prophet highlighted one of his main objective is to
perfecting good morals

“I have been sent for the purpose of perfecting good
morals”.

Cont. Ethics from Islamic
Perspective

Islam asks its believers to observe certain norms and
moral codes in;
dealings with relatives
with neighbours and friends;
in their business transactions;
in the market;
in their social affairs.
in all spheres of private and public life.

Norms and Moral Codes in
Islam

Values and Cultures

Values are beliefs of a person in which they have an
emotional investment.(either for or against
something)

Values

The totality of socially transmitted behavior
patterns, arts, beliefs,
institutions, and all other products of human work
and thought
– These patterns, traits, and products considered as
the expression of a
particular community, period, class, or population

Cultures

Culture is the complex and elaborate system of
meaning and behavior that defines the way of life for
a group or society.”

Cont. Cultures

Islam and Contemporary
Ethical Dilemmas

Situation that often involves an apparent mental
conflict between moral imperatives, in which to obey
one would result in transgressing another.

Moral imperatives originate inside a person's mind
that compels a person to act.

Ethical Dilemma

 Islamic civilization, since the time of Prophet Muhammad
(s) until now, is firmly founded on the concept of „rule of
law.‟

 For that reason, the law is published and known, and
citizens and courts are expected to uphold it.

 Muslim citizens must adhere to Islamic law - Shariah. If a
Muslim citizen commits a religious violation, he is judged
according to Islamic law. A non-Muslim citizen is judged
in religious issues by the laws of his own faith.

Islam is a complete package – a complete message
and way of life.
Islam looks to the benefit of the society, it covers the
three essential needs of human life: physical,
intellectual and spiritual.
These three aspects of the faith are known
individually as:
 Islam – Divine law
 Imān - Belief
 Iħsān - Ethics and moral character

Objectives of Shariah:
Establishment of justice;
Educating the individual;
Upholding morality, in public and private;
Preventing hardship, on individuals and society;
Preventing oppression.

The Shariah covers all aspects of human life.
Classical Shariah manuals are often divided into four
parts: …personal acts of worship;… commercial
dealings;…marriage and divorce, and penal laws.

Ethics of Islam deal with those things that are
prohibited in Islam and prohibition of which
is beneficial to all mankind.

Issues faced by current generation :
 Employee theft,
 Drugs and alcohol
 Misuse of proprietary information
 Abuse of company expenses
 Conflicts of interest
 Discrimination in hiring and promotion

Such things that shake the pillars of one‟s existence.

Organizational Factors:

Products Trading(Halal & Haram )

Mounting and implementing code of ethics in such an
organization is undoubtedly flawed in the traditional
sense.

The reasons for Qur‟ānic legislation on all matters were:

To improve the position of women and orphans
To eliminate blood feuds
prohibition of gambling
Forbid wine-drinking
Forbid Interest

THANK YOU!!!
