WHAT IS DISABILITY?
Disabilities is an umbrella term covering;
a) impairments,
b) activity limitations, and
c) participation restrictions.
Thus, disability is a complex phenomenon,
reflecting an interaction between features
of a persons body and features of the
society in which he or she lives.

MEANING OF DISABILITY
An impairment is a problem in body
function or structure;
An activity limitation is a difficulty
encountered by an individual in executing a
task or action;
A participation restriction is a problem
experienced by an individual in involvement
in life situations.
Official Definition of Persons With
Disabilities by the Government of Pakistan
For the quota system, disabled person means
a person, on account of injury, disease or
congenital deformity is handicapped in
education or for undertaking any gainful
profession or employment in order to earn his
livelihood, and includes a person who is blind,
deaf, physically handicapped or mentally
retarded.

Types of Disabilities among Children
1. Hearing Impairment

2. Visual Impairment

3. Physical Impairment

4. Mental Retardation

5. Learning Disability

Hearing Impairment

Hearing impairment occurs when there is a problem with or
damage to one or more parts of the ear. The degree of the
loss, the age at which it was acquired, the type of loss all
combine to make each childs condition unique. It is
important to remember that a hearing impairment does not
affect intellectual potential. But without early intervention, it
can affect both the development of that potential and
interactions with family and others.
Visual Impairment

Visual impairment is a term experts use to
describe any kind of vision loss, whether it is
someone who has partial vision loss or full.
The classifications here are moderate, severe and
profound.

Physical Impairment:

A physical disability is a condition that interferes with the childs
ability to use his or her body. It substantially limits participation in
one or more life activities. Physically handicapping conditions can
stem from congenital factors, problems during the birth process,
accident and disease. The cause of a condition and the age at which
condition develops influence the kinds of problems that children
with physical disabilities face.
Mental Retardation
Mental retardation begins in childhood or adolescence
before the age of 18. In most cases, it persists throughout
adult life. A level of intellectual functioning (as
measured by standard intelligence tests ) that is well
below average and results in significant limitations in
the person's daily living skills (adaptive functioning) e.g.
when someone has certain limitations in communicating,
taking care of him or herself, and social skills. These
limitations will cause a child to learn and develop more
slowly than a typical child or may take longer to learn to
speak, walk, and take care of their personal needs such
as dressing or eating, learning in school. They will learn,
but it will take them longer.
Learning Disability

It refers to a variety of disorders that affect the acquisition,
retention, understanding, organization or use of verbal and/or non-
verbal information. These range in severity and invariably
interfere with the acquisition and use of one or more of the
following important skills: oral language , reading, writing,
mathematics etc.
Examples: Dyslexia (learning to read)
Dysgraphia (to write) and Dyscalculia (to grade appropriate
mathematics).
