GATHERING SYSTEM
ØRadial

ØAxial or Trunk
Radial Gathering System

A number of flowlines converge into a Central Processing

Unit.

Flowline
Axial or Trunk Gathering System

A number of flowlines empty in to a large header ,

which empties the fluid into a trunk pipeline , which
in turn empties the fluid into a central processing
unit .

Stock tanks
ØOil from the separator flows through the flowline to
the stock tanks to be stored .
Ø
ØStock tanks are of two types :

•Bolted carbon steel stock tanks

•Welded carbon steel stock tanks
Ø
Bolted Stock Tank ..
ØUsually made of 12 or 10 gauge carbon steel and are
galvanized .
Ø
Ø It has an advantage that it can be easily
assembled and repaired on the site .

Welded Stock Tank

ØIs prefabricated of half a centimeter or thicker
steel .
Ø
ØHave to be transported to the site after being
assembled at the plant .

The Gauge Tape Test ..
ØA Gauger lowers a gauge tape marked each 1 / 8 or 1 / 10
inches with a brass weight on the end , down into the
Measurement of Volume
tank from a reel .
Ø
ØA gauge or a tank table is used to relate the height
of oil to volume of oil in the stock tank .
Ø
How the volume of oil is calculated??
The Turbine meter
ØTurbine meter is used to measure the volume of oil
being transferred .
Ø
ØThe volume of oil is measured by the number of
spins in the turbine shaft as oil flows through the
turbine .
BS & W Test ..
ØSample of oil is taken from the stock tank using a
‘ thief ’ ( a brass or glass cylinder about 15 ” long )
Ø
ØTemp . of the oil is measured and it is centrifuged in
a glass tube with a shake out m / c .
Ø
ØSediments and water spun to the bottom of the
container as lighter oil rises .
Ø
ØThese impurities are called basic sediments and
water ( BS & W ) content of the water .
Ø
ØRefiners do not accept oil with BS & W greater than
1 %.
Gas Volume Measurement ..
ØOrifice gas meter is commonly used .
Ø
ØIt measures the difference in gas pressure on gas
flowing through an orifice onboth sides of the orifice .
Natural Gas Tests ..

Charcoal Test ..
ØMeasures the condensate content of the gas by passing
the gas over the activated charcoal to adsorb the
condensate .
Ø
ØCondensate is then removed by distillation and
measured .
The Fractional Analysis ..
ØCarried out in a laboratory by a chromatograph .
Ø
ØUsed to measure :
Ø
•Percentage of each hydrocarbon .
•Water component .
•GPM ( gallon per thousand cu . ft ) of propane and
higher gases .
•Calorific value of gas ..
