Devices:Nokia trials first internet modem
supporting LTE
September 7, 2009 - NokiaPressServices
Nokia today introduced its first ever Long Term Evolution (LTE) capable internet
modem, which is based on Nokias own LTE modem technology development.
The Nokia Internet Modem RD-3 is available to be used in LTE technology development
with various network vendors, measurement equipment manufacturers and operators.
Nokia is committed to supporting industry activities aimed at maturing LTE
technology to enable the first commercial networks to launch in 2010, says Jani
Menp, Project Manager, LTE/SAE Interoperability and Trials, Nokia. Nokia is a
founding member in the LTE/SAE Trial Initiative (LSTI) and carries out interoperability
testing with a number of network vendors, collaborates with measurement equipment
manufacturers and is ready to support operators with their LTE deployment activities. The
Nokia Internet Modem RD-3 is used in all these activities.
Nokia Internet Modem RD-3 supports interoperability with GSM/EDGE and
WCDMA/HSPA to make the most out of the global GSM and WCDMA reach right
from the start
Nokia Internet Modem RD-3 also supports multiple LTE frequency bands so is
able to meet operators deployment plans across many different countries and
regions.

Points to Consider
Peak data rates are similar in HSPA/LTE and in WiMAX with the same amount
of spectrum.
HSPA uses only FDD. WiMAX uses only TDD. LTE has harmonized FDD and
TDD options.
WiMAX is the only TDD solution now before TD-LTE is available by 2011
LTE will eventually be available on all existing WiMAX frequencies including
2300 and 3500.
Low frequency FDD is better for coverage than high frequency TDD. HSPA900
and LTE800 are best for coverage.
LTE has highest spectral efficiency, 20-50% more than HSPA or WiMAX
HSPA has the benefit of low cost terminals and smart phones like iPhone and
Google G1.
HSPA and LTE are harmonized = all LTE terminals include HSPA. Same Flexi
HW for HSPA and LTE. No such harmonization with WiMAX.
HSPA/LTE chips have in-built GSM/EDGE capability
HSPA/LTE has by far the largest device eco-system pushing prices down.
WiMAX ecosystem looks less clear.
