MODE PREFERENCES OF

STUDENTS FROM
NORTHERN TOWNS OF
VIGA, PANGANIBAN AND
BAGAMANOC


Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the
Study
The mode of transportation in Catanduanes
has been fast evolving in the recent years.
A few years ago, the yet under-developed
Circumferential Road Phase I connecting
the capital town of Virac to the North by
way of San Miguel-Viga national roads
only serviced jeeps and buses which
carries the riding public commonly
students.
One area of study is the fifth class
municipality of Bagamanoc bounded on the
eastern side by the Pacific Ocean,
on the northwestern side by the
municipality of Pandan, western side by the
municipality of Caramoran, and on the
south by the municipality of Panganiban.
Population in 2010 was est. to 11,370 people
(en.wikipedia.org).
The municipality of Panganiban (Payo), a
fifth class municipality with a 2010
population census of 9,738 people.
Situated on the northern part of
Catanduanes, eastern part facing the
Pacific Ocean. It is bounded on the north
by the municipality of Bagamanoc, on the
south by the municipality of Viga, and on
the west by the municipality of Caramoran

Last area for study is Viga, a 4

class municipality in the province having
a 2010 population census of 20,669
people.
Nestled in one of the widest inland plains of
the island, between three neighboring
towns and the Philippine Sea. To the south
is the town of Gigmoto; to the west is the
town of Caramoran. It is about 52
kilometers (32 mi) north from the capital
town of Virac (en.wikipedia.org).
1.2 Statement of the
Problem
The mode of transportation that students
chose may vary from person to person.
Apart from that, the circumstances and
situations will also greatly influence the
mode of transportation they prefer. No
matter what mode have chosen,
transportation does play a big role in day
to day life

A more different case could be applied to the
options students from Northern towns of
Viga, Panganiban and Bagamanoc do have.
Student commuters may have a couple of
choices as different types of public vehicles
offer transport service from these towns
going to the capital town of Virac.
However, these choices do not include
considerations for safety.
1.3 Objectives
The primary aim of this study is to determine the
mode preference of student commuters of
each town of Viga, Panganiban and
Bagamanoc and determine which factors
cause students to choose a specific mode over
the other available options.
This study will also seek to provide information
as to the mode of transportation available in
the fore stated towns and categorize them as
to the level of safety, the time of travel,
economy and level of comfort.
Most importantly, this study aims to
recommend to the public vehicle
operators the factors that should be
observed and optimized in order to
ensure student commuters choice for
their service and then propose policy and
planning measures that could be
implemented to help foster and encourage
the use of a safe and reasonable modes of
travel.

1.4 Significance of the Study
The results of this study will be of more help
and importance to student commuters who
came from the Northern towns of
Catanduanes. As students cant even
predict how their preferences vary
depending on circumstances, they may not
even think of what mode to choose. They
will adjust with whatever hey have in hand
or just borrow to deal with the situation.
Conclusions that will be derived based on
this study will provide the student
commuters a better idea of taking a ride
with full consideration on factors involving
safety, economy and time.

It will open up awareness in taking time to
consider what type of vehicle they will
choose and stick to. This study will give a
wide perspective of a modern and better
way of riding public vehicles.

1.5 Scope and Limitations
The researchers chose to limit their study
and observations to student commuters with
specific routes from the towns of Viga,
Panganiban and Bagamanoc to the capital
town of Virac, Province of Catanduanes and
vice-versa.

Respondents will primarily include students
from Catanduanes State University,
Catanduanes Colleges and Christian
Polytechnic Institute of Catanduanes.
Public vehicles which are included in the study
will be enlisted together with the operator and
the authorized route of travel, whether they are
registered or not. The numbers of operating
vehicles will be used in the analysis of its impact
to the mode preferences of the respondents.

Due to a large number of possible respondents
together with the time constraints and other
academic obligations of the researchers, the
researchers will limit the number of
respondents to only sixty students, randomly
selected.
Mode preferences of students will be
ranked individually according to towns.

Vehicular accidents which are in
connection with the study and route
covered will be recorded accordingly but
will not consume a valuable amount of
space in the analysis and interpretation of
data.

2.1 Mode of
Transport
Mode of transport is a term used to distinguish
substantially different ways to perform transport.
The most dominant modes of transport are
aviation, land transport, which includes rail, road
and off-road transport, and ship transport.
Other modes also exist, including pipelines, cable
transport, and space transport. Human-powered
transport and animal-powered transport are
sometimes regarded as their own mode, but these
normally also fall into the other categories.

Most dominant modes of transport are aviation,
land transport and ship transport.

For land transport, there is rail transport which
is a means of conveyance of passengers and goods
by way of wheeled vehicles running on rail track,
known as a railway or railroad. Another is road
transport, an identifiable route in the city or village
commonly used by the pedestrians, motorcycles,
automobile, bicycles and trucks.
Air transport is a means of conveyance of
passengers by the way of airplane and other
air transportation.

Water transport is the process of
transport that a watercraft, such as a barge,
boat, ship or sailboat, makes over a body of
water, such as a sea, ocean, lake, canal or
river.
2.2 Mode of Transportation off Catanduanes
Virac Airport is the only airport serving the
island province of Catanduanes located in Virac.
The airport is classified as a Class 2 principal
(minor domestic) airport by the Civil Aviation
Authority of the Philippines, a body of the
Department of Transportation and
Communications responsible for the operations
of not only this airport but also of all other
airports in the Philippines except major
international airports.

Daily Ferry services bridge Catanduanes, from the
Port of Virac and Port of San Andres, to the main
island of Luzon, via Tabaco Seaport in Tabaco City,
Albay.

Several ferry companies offer trips at different
hours of the day between the two ports, which
normally takes about three and a half hours.
Traveling within Virac or to other destinations in
the province is by local buses, jeepneys, tricycles,
pedicabs and UV Express vans.

The most common road vehicle are vans and
buses in the Northern part of Catanduanes
especially Viga, Payo and Bagamanoc, a wheeled
passenger vehicle that carries its own motor.
Other users of roads include trucks, motorcycles,
bicycles and pedestrians.
2.3 Mode of Transportation within Catanduanes
The journey to the Northern towns under study
takes about one and a half hour and costs about 70
to 80 Philippine peso. For the shorter distances
inside the town, people make use of bicycles,
motorcycles and tricycles.
