water and vegetation. .WATERSHED APPROACH Watershed: Concept: A geo hydrological area that drains at a common point on the drainage system. It is bounded by ridgeline which starts from and closes at the same common drainage point. Watershed concept relates to the conservation and integrated development of natural resources like land.

.

Watershed approach provides a logic frame for establishing the biophysical linkages between upland and downstream activities.1. 3. Watershed provide a frame work for analyzing the effect of human interaction on the environment . 5. 4. 2. farming system and community development programmes. Land use activities and up land disturbance often result in a chain of environmental impact that can readily examined in watershed. Watershed project facilitates integration of forestry . .soil conservation. Waterdshed approach enables stakeholders planners and managers to develop the natural resources in a logic manners and on sustainable basis. The environmental impact within the watershed operate as feed back for change in social system.

geology land use. . climate.  Watershed approach helps in integrated planning for conservation.  Watershed is considered to be ideal unit for managing natural resources on one hand and maintenance of executed work and to evaluate their impact on other hand. development of land and water resources on sustainable basis in accordance with their nature and problem. legal aspect of the watershed area for obtaining the most rational and productive interaction between these resources.NEED  Knowledge of land & soil such as slopes. social economic. soil depth. soil type.

WATERSHED MANAGEMENT Watershed generally consist of these physical sectors. . These component are hydro logically interspersed and would have to be treated as on geo hydrological entity for planning and implementation of watershed development programme in order to ensure optimum use of natural resources on sustainable basis.  Non arable land which include forest land pasture land and barren land.  Drainage area with net work of drainage line and water bodies.  Arable land.

C.STRATEGY  Adoption of project approach.UG through appropriate training.  Institutional linkage for direction .  Integrated and comprehensive development and maintenance of land and water resources for higher production on sustained base.control and coordination. .  Promotion of skill of member of community based organizations (CBO) W.  Active participation of people and functional groups.SHG.

 PIA and independent organization should act as a facilitator.APPROACH Micro watershed of 1000-5000 hectare in selected village is ideal for treatment. . implemented by the people and their functional groups.  Each watershed development project may be treated in phased manner over a period of 4-7 years.  Watershed development project must be planned.

.C.  Application of participating Rural appraisal (PRA) technique for assessment of local resources.UG & W. felt need and prioritization of problem as well as selection of works and activities.GUIDELINES FOR WATERSHED DEVELOPMENT GOI has provided common guidelines for watershed development project funded under IWMP.  An independent agency PIA has been mobilized through WDT to village community to form SHG. These guidelines have becomes effective from 2008 State Level Nodal Agency (SLNA) have initiated the process of implementation of IWMP as per common guidelines in the State Guidelines envisage that:  Programme should be implemented with active participation of local people and their functional groups.
