INTRODUCTION

• Concrete is weak in tension and has a
brittle character. The concept of using fibers
to improve the characteristics of
construction materials is very old .
• Addition of fibers to concrete makes it a
more homogeneous and more isotropic
material.
• When concrete cracks, the randomly
oriented fibers start functioning, arrest
crack formation and propagation, and thus
improve strength and ductility.

Diameter ranges from 0. hooked. • Glass Fibers • Straight. . twisted.FIBRE TYPES • Fibers are produced from different materials in various shapes and sizes.13 to 1.3mm).25 to 0.

and polyester.02 to 0. . Diameter ranges from 0. cotton. nylon. twisted. fibrillated. Other Synthetic Fibers Kevlar. and with buttoned ends.Natural Organic and Mineral Fibers Wood. asbestos. bamboo. Polypropylene Fibers Plain. They come in wide range of sizes.38mm.

ASPECT RATIO A convenient parameter describing a fiber is its aspect ratio (L/D). Typical aspect ratio ranges from about 30 to 150 for length of 6 to 75mm. . defined as the fiber length divided by an equivalent fiber diameter.

WHY HAIR AS A FIBRE • Hair is used as a fibre reinforcing material in concrete for the following reasons: • It has a high tensile strength . . • It is also available at a very negligible cost. • Due to nano cross-section of hair and its proper tensile strength its application is to reduce the shrinkage of concrete mixtures.

Babol. Iran human hair fibers were used in 0.2 weight percent and the length of the fibers in each case varied between 15 and 60 millimeter and the samples were made of dimensions of 40×40×160 millimeters. Babol University of Technology. From :Seyed Mostafa Shabanian and Sara Department of Civil Engineering.4 and 0.8 and 1. Results are shown as considerable amount of hair may reduce in the shrinkage in the hair reinforced concrete. .
