COVERAGE PACKAGE

Our coverage package consists of a numbering and coloring scheme that makes it simple for our players
to learn. The numbering and coloring scheme alerts our players as to who his blitzing and who is
covering the #1, #2, and #3 receivers. Also, the colors indicate to us who is doing what in our 3 Deep
Coverages. We will also play a quarters coverage and a Cover 2 coverage. We will also play a version
of a Tampa 2 coverage. In our Money Package we will use the same number and coloring scheme.
Our coverage package consists of (6) Man, (6) 3 Deep, (1) s Coverage, (1) 2 Deep, and (1) Tampa 2:

COVER 1
THEORY: COVER 1 is a man free coverage. We will bring either 3, 4, or 5 man pressure. When we bring 3 man pressure only the Defensive
Linemen will be rushing. When we bring our 4 man pressure package only one of our Linebackers will be blitzing. When we
bring our 5 man pressure only two of our Linebackers will be blitzing. The two 5 man pressures that we will use are our Ammo
and Bird Packages.
RULES: It gives us the advantage of bringing pressure from either the middle or the edge of our opponents formations. These blitz
packages are good for stopping our opponents inside running game. By being able to bring 3 to 5 man pressure it allows us to
cause confusion to the offensive line, and create an element of surprise with all of our different movements. In regards to
coverage, all of the offenses WRs and RBs are accounted for by our personnel playing man coverage. The Corners will have
the #1 receivers and the Dogs will have the #2 receivers. The Linebackers will play a Banjo/Rat technique on the #3 RB or the
remaining back versus a Doubles or Trips formation. The FS will be playing a man free technique that is played much like a deep
middle safety in 3 deep coverage. This will allow him to roam the field and help the Dogs on the #2 receivers, and to make plays in
the deep middle part of the field.
WEAKNESS: As with any man coverage, if we are not successful with our pressure we can allow big plays to happen. If we do not have
pressure then we are allowing our individuals playing man coverage to be out on an island and exposed.
ADJUSTMENTS: SPIN CALL A Spin Call is made when we encounter a Trips formations. When we get a Trips formation our Dogs and
FS will be the adjusters. To the 3 receiver side the Dog will have #2 and the FS will have #3. The Dog away from the 3
receiver side will get his run read first and then spin to the middle of the field replacing the FS in the middle 1/3.

COVER 1 FLY
THEORY: COVER 1 FLY is a man free coverage. We will bring either 3, 4, or 5 man pressure. When we bring 3 man pressure only the
Defensive Linemen will be rushing. When we bring our 4 man pressure package only one of our Linebackers will be blitzing.

Banjo/Rat technique on the remaining RB. The FS will be playing a man free technique that is played much like a deep middle
safety in 3 deep coverage. This will allow him to roam the field and help the Dogs to the 3 receiver side. He will make plays in
the deep middle part of the field. No matter what Trips formation we see the FS will always remain a man free player. The FS
free allows us to have 4 defenders playing over the 3 receiver side.
WEAKNESS: As with any man coverage, if we are not successful with our pressure we can allow big plays to happen. If we do not have
pressure then we are allowing our individuals playing man coverage to be out on an island and exposed.
ADJUSTMENTS: FLY CALL A Fly Call is made when we encounter a Trips formations. When we get a Trips formation our Dogs
are the adjusters. To the 3 receiver side the Dog will have #2 and the Dog away will fly/travel over and take #3. The FS
will remain a man free player playing over the top of the Trips formation.

COVER BLACK
THEORY: COVER BLACK is a type of zero man coverage. Zero coverage means that we do not have anyone free in the deep middle of the
field. The only time that we have people free will be when the Linebackers have the low hole area. Cover Black alerts our players
that a Dog is blitzing. We will bring only a 4 or 5 man pressure with this coverage. When we bring our 4 man pressure only
a Dog is blitzing. When we bring a 5 man pressure we will use our Storm Package. The blitz will come from the side opposite the
Slant or Whip Call. Slant = a weak blitz and Whip = a strong blitz. If we make a Strong or Weak Call that particular side will
blitz depending on the strength of the formation.
RULES: It allows us to bring pressure from the edge of our opponents formations. This blitz package is good for stopping our opponents
outside running game. It also allows us the option of bringing outside pressure versus the pass. By bringing pressure off the edge it
will allow us to stop the option, sweep, outside zone, etc. Also, this outside pressure allows us to overload the offenses linemen
which creates a numbers mismatch on the edge. In regards to coverage, all of the offenses WRs and RBs are accounted for by our
personnel playing man coverage. The Corners will have the #1 receivers. The Dog to the blitz side will be the blitzer, and the Dog
away from the blitz will cover #2 man. The Linebackers will play a Trio technique on the #3 RB if we are only bringing a 4 man
pressure. They will play a Banjo/Rat technique on the #3 RB if we are bringing a 5 man pressure. The FS will have man coverage on
the #2 receiver to the blitz side.
WEAKNESS: As with any man coverage, if we are not successful with our pressure we can allow big plays to happen. If we do not have
pressure then we are allowing our individuals playing man coverage to be out on an island and exposed.
ADJUSTMENTS: If we have a blitz that is away from the 3 receiver/ Trips formation side the FS is the only one that has to adjust. The Dog
to the 3 receiver side will have #2 and the FS will have #3. If we have a blitz that is to the 3 receiver/Trips formation side
the FS and Dogs have to adjust. The Dog to the 3 receiver side is suppose to blitz, but because of the trips he will come off
and cover #2. The Dog away from the 3 receiver side will travel over and become the blitzer. The FS will have the #3
receiver to the Trips side.

COVER BROWN
THEORY: COVER BROWN is a type of zero man coverage. Zero coverage means that we do not have anyone free in the deep middle of
the field. Cover Brown alerts our players that a Dog and two Linebackers are blitzing. We will only bring a 6 man pressure with
this coverage. We will either call a Bird package blitz and add a Dog to it, or run Typhoon, Twister, or Tornado. The blitz will
come from the side opposite the Slant or Whip Call. Slant = a weak blitz and Whip = a strong blitz. If we make a Strong or Weak
Call that particular side will Blitz depending on the strength of the formation.
When we bring a 6 man pressure, the remaining Linebacker will have the #3 RB or remaining
back. The FS will have man coverage on the #2 receiver to the blitz side.
The Dog

COVER 0
THEORY: COVER 0 is a type of zero man coverage. Zero coverage means that we do not have anyone free in the deep middle of
the field. The only time that we will have people free is when the Linebackers are in the low hole area. Cover 0 alerts our
players that both Dogs are blitzing. We will bring only a 5 man pressure with this coverage. The only call that we will make out
of this package is Dig Pinch Cover 0.
RULES: It allows us to bring pressure from both edges of our opponents formations. This blitz package is good for stopping our opponents
outside running game. It also allows us the option of bringing outside pressure versus the pass. By being pressure off the edge it will
allow us to stop the option, sweep, outside zone, etc. Also, this outside pressure allows us to overload the offenses linemen which
creates a numbers mismatch on the edge. In regards to coverage, all of the offenses WRs and RBs are accounted for by our
personnel playing man coverage. The Corners will have the #1 receivers. Versus a 2 back formation both Dogs will blitz. The FS
will go to the 2 receiver side and cover #2 man. The Linebackers will play a Trio technique on the 2 RBs. If we a presented with
any 1 back formations we will check Smoke Pinch Cover 1.
WEAKNESS: As with any man coverage, if we are not successful with our pressure we can allow big plays to happen. If we do not have
pressure then we are allowing our individuals playing man coverage to be out on an island and exposed.
ADJUSTMENTS: We will only run this defensive coverage and blitz versus any 2 back formations. If we are presented with any 1 back
formations we will check Smoke Pinch Cover 1. By calling this particular blitz our defensive linemen do not have to
adjust their assignments and responsibilities prior to the snap. Also, there are too many checks and changing of
responsibilities that the players have to make.

COVER BLUE
THEORY: COVER BLUE is a true zero man coverage. Zero coverage means that we do not have anyone free in the deep middle of the
field. Cover Blue alerts our players that all three Linebackers are blitzing. We will bring only a 6 man pressure with this
coverage. The only blitz package that we will run with this is our Bird Package plus the remaining linebacker. For example,
Falcon Strong Blue
RULES: It allows us to bring pressure from the middle of our opponents formations. This blitz package is good for stopping our opponents
inside running game. In regards to coverage, all of the offenses WRs and RBs are accounted for by our personnel playing man
coverage. The Corners will have the #1 receivers. The Dogs will have the #2 receivers, and the FS will have the number #3 receiver.
All three Linebackers will blitz. The Bird Package will alert two of the Linebackers to run the blitz called, and the remaining
Linebacker will blitz his gap.
WEAKNESS: As with any man coverage, if we are not successful with our pressure we can allow big plays to happen. If we do not have
pressure then we are allowing our individuals playing man coverage to be out on an island and exposed.
ADJUSTMENTS: There are no adjustments in Cover Blue. The Dog has to remember that versus a Trips formation he has the running back.

COVER GRAY
THEORY: COVER GRAY is a zone defense with 3 Defensive Backs (Corners and FS) protecting the outside and deep middle 1/3. We will
have 4 Individuals playing the underneath zones depending on what type of pressure we bring. Our Cover Gray package is similar
to a Fire Zone concept. A Fire Zone is defined as a defensive call that allows the defense to blitz and still play zone coverage
behind it. We will run our 4 man pressure packages. The 4 man pressures consists of just bringing one Linebacker.
RULES: It allows us to bring pressure from the middle and edge of our opponents formations. This blitz package allows us to still bring
pressure, but change our coverage philosophy from a man to a zone coverage defense. We are a route reading, zone coverage
defense. Our opponent receivers routes will be our players keys that determine what responsibility they have versus the pass. It
also allows us to defend the deep ball better and let our personnel play a different type of technique versus the pass. In regards to
coverage, the Corners will protect the deep outside 1/3s. The FS will protect the deep middle 1/3. The Dogs will protect the Curl to
Flat zones. The remaining 2 Linebackers in coverage he will be the Final 3 and 3 Hole player. If we get a Doubles/4 Wides
formation the Linebacker playing the 3 Hole will become a Final 2 player.
WEAKNESS: As with any 3 deep zone concept defense, the flat areas can be exploited. Any 5 man short and out patterns can also be
exploited in a 3 deep coverage defense.
ADJUSTMENTS: We will make only one adjustment in Cover Gray. If we get a 4 WR/Doubles Formation the Dog away from the Back will
make an Im Big Call. The Im Big Call tells him that he will run with the #2 receiver to his side if both the #1 and #2
receiver run vertical.

THEORY: COVER GREEN is a zone defense with 3 Defensive Backs (Corners and FS) protecting the outside and deep middle 1/3. We will

package is similar to a Fire Zone concept. A Fire Zone is defined as a defensive call that allows the defense to blitz and still play

COVER GOLD
THEORY: COVER GOLD is a rotating zone defense with 3 Defensive Backs (Corners and FS) protecting the outside and deep middle 1/3
after the snap. Cover Gold alerts our personnel that we will be showing a pre-snap 2 Deep alignment. The Dog that is showing a 2
Deep alignment will always come down on the snap in this coverage. We will have either 3 or 4 individuals playing the
underneath zones depending on what type of pressure we bring. Our Cover Gold is just like our Cover Green package in that is
similar to a Fire Zone concept. A Fire Zone is defined as a defensive call that allows the defense to blitz and still play zone
coverage behind it. We will run our 5 man pressure packages. The 5 man pressures that we will run will be our Ammo and
Bird Packages.
RULES: It allows us to show our opponents offense a different pre-snap alignment that will hopefully create some confusion for the
quarterback. It allows us to bring pressure from the middle and edge of our opponents formations. This blitz package allows us to
still bring pressure, but change our coverage philosophy from a man to a zone coverage defense. We are a route reading, zone
coverage defense. Our opponent receivers routes will be our players keys that determine what responsibility they have versus the

regards to coverage, the Corners will protect the deep outside 1/3s. The FS will make a Lucy or Roger call that will determine our
pre-snap alignment. He will still protect the deep middle 1/3 on the snap. The Dogs will protect the Curl to Flat zones. The Dog
away from the Lucy or Roger call will be the one that will show the 2 Deep look and give an Im Back call to the Bat on his side.
On the snap the Dog will always come down and play his run/pass responsibility. Depending on the blitz packages, we will have
either one or two Linebackers playing the underneath hook areas. If we have 2 Linebackers in coverage one will be the Final 3 player
and the other will be the 3 Hole player. If only one Linebacker is in coverage he will be the Final 3 player.
WEAKNESS: As with any 3 deep zone concept defense, the flat areas can be exploited. Any 5 man short and out patterns can also be
exploited in a 3 deep coverage defense.
ADJUSTMENTS: There are no adjustments in Cover Gold.

COVER RED
THEORY: COVER RED is a rotating zone defense with 3 Defensive Backs (Corners and Dog) protecting the outside and deep middle 1/3
after the snap. Cover Red alerts our personnel that we will be showing a pre-snap 2 Deep alignment. In Cover Red, the Dog that is
showing a 2 Deep alignment will always be the deep middle 1/3 player, and the FS will always come down in the curl to flat area.
We will have either 3 or 4 individuals playing the underneath zones depending on what type of pressure we bring. The Dog to the
FS side will always be the hot blitzer. Our Cover Red package is just like our Cover Green package in that is similar to a Fire
Zone concept. A Fire Zone is defined as a defensive call that allows the defense to blitz and still play zone coverage behind it.
We will run our 4 and 5 man pressure packages. The 5 man pressures that we will run will be our Storm Package.
RULES: It allows us to show our opponents offense a different pre-snap alignment that will hopefully create some confusion for the
quarterback. It allows us to bring pressure from the edge of our opponents formations. This blitz package allows us to
still bring pressure, but change our coverage philosophy from a man to a zone coverage defense. We are a route reading, zone
coverage defense. Our opponent receivers routes will be our players keys that determine what responsibility they have versus the
pass. It also allows us to defend the deep ball better and let our personnel play a different type of technique versus the pass. In
regards to coverage, the Corners will protect the deep outside 1/3s. The FS will make a Lucy or Roger call that will determine our
pre-snap 2 deep alignment. He will come down on the snap and play the Curl/Flat area. The Dog to the FSs call will alert him that
he is the hot blitzer. The Dog away from the Lucy or Roger call will be the one that will show the 2 Deep look and give an Im
Gone call to the Bat on his side. He will then work to the deep middle 1/3 on the snap. Depending on the blitz packages, we will
have either two or three Linebackers playing the underneath hook areas. The Bat to the Im Gone call will have the curl to flat
area. If we bring 4 man pressure the remaining Linebackers will play the Final 3 or 3 Hole. If we bring 5 man pressure the
remaining Linebacker will be the Final 3 player.
WEAKNESS: As with any 3 deep zone concept defense, the flat areas can be exploited. Any 5 man short and out patterns can also be
exploited in a 3 deep coverage defense.
ADJUSTMENTS: There are no adjustments in Cover Red.

COVER RED X
THEORY: COVER RED X is a rotating zone defense with 3 Defensive Backs (Corners and Dog) protecting the outside and deep middle 1/3
after the snap. Cover Red X alerts our personnel that we will be showing a pre-snap 2 Deep alignment. In Cover Red X, the Dog
that is showing a 2 Deep alignment will always be the deep middle 1/3 player, and the FS will always come down in the hook area.
We will have only 3 individuals playing the underneath zones. Our Cover Red X package is just like our Cover Green package in
that is similar to a Fire Zone concept. A Fire Zone is defined as a defensive call that allows the defense to blitz and still play zone
coverage behind it. We will run only a 5 man pressure package. The 5 man pressures that we will run will be our Bird Package.
Cover Red X is also the coverage package that we will run with our FS Blitz package. The FS Blitz package is known as our
Weapons Package. We will still only bring 5 man pressures with the Weapon Package.

The FS will make a Lucy or Roger call that will determine our
pre-snap 2 deep alignment. He will come down on the snap and play the Final 3 area. The Dog to the FSs call will have the Curl

Gone call to the Bat on his side. He will then work to the deep middle 1/3 on the snap. The Bat to the Im Gone call will have the
Curl to Flat area. The remaining Linebackers will be blitzing.
WEAKNESS: As with any 3 deep zone concept defense, the flat areas can be exploited. Any 5 man short and out patterns can also be
exploited in a 3 deep coverage defense.

COVER RED CLOUD

THEORY: COVER RED CLOUD is a rotating zone defense with 3 Defensive Backs (Corner, FS, and Dog) protecting the outside and deep
middle 1/3 after the snap. Cover Red Cloud alerts our personnel that we will be showing a pre-snap 2 Deep alignment. It also
alerts our personnel as to which Corner will be playing the flat area to the FSs call side. In Cover Red Cloud, the Dog that is
showing a 2 Deep alignment will always be the deep middle 1/3 player. The FS will always be over the deep outside 1/3 to the
Corner that is down. We will either bring a 4 or 5 man pressure. The 5 man pressures that we will use will be our Bird Package.
When we run our Bird Package we will have a Spy call which alerts our Nose to drop back in the hook area.
Our opponent receivers routes will be our players keys that determine what responsibility they have versus the
pass. It also allows us to defend the deep ball better and let our personnel play a different type of technique versus the pass. In
regards to coverage, the The FS will make a Lucy or Roger call that will determine our pre-snap 2 deep alignment. He will always
be in the deep outside 1/3 over the Corner that is down. The Corner to the FSs side will have the flat area. The Corner away will
have the deep outside 1/3. The Dog to the FSs call will have the curl area. The Dog away from the Lucy or Roger call will be
the one that will show the 2 Deep look and give an Im Gone call to the Bat on his side. He will then work to the deep middle 1/3
on the snap. The Bat to the Im Gone call will have the Curl to Flat area. If we only bring one Linebacker then the Mike or Bat
will have Final 3.
WEAKNESS: In this particular type of 3 Deep coverage the flat area to the Im Gone call can be exploited. Any 5 man short and out
patterns can also be exploited in a 3 deep coverage defense.

ADJUSTMENTS: When we bring our 5 man pressures with our Bird Package, there has to be a Spy call. The Spy call alerts the Nose
that he must drop back to the hook area after he gets his run/pass read. This is a slow developing move.

COVER TAMPA 3
THEORY: Our COVER TAMPA 3 is a true 3 Deep pass coverage with a 5 under 3 deep coverage philosophy. We will have 5 individuals
playing the underneath zones, and 3 individuals playing the 3 deep zones. We will run a 3 or 4 man pressure package. The 4 man
pressures consists of just bringing the Mike Linebacker. This is a 2, 3rd down and extremely long pass coverage package.
RULES: It allows us to bring pressure from the middle of our opponents formations.
In regards to
coverage, the Corners will protect the deep outside flat areas. The FS will protect the deep middle 1/3. The Dogs will protect the
outside 1/3rd areas. Both Bats will be the curl/flat players. If the Mike does not blitz then he will be the Final 3 player. If we bring
the Mike then we will only have 4 players in the underneath zones.
WEAKNESS: With this particular coverage our Dogs can be exploited in their outside 1/3 areas with the vertical routes of the #1 and #2
receivers.

COVER ORANGE
THEORY: COVER ORANGE, or s, is a 4 Deep zone coverage. This coverage can be run versus any offensive formation or offensive
personnel. For example, 21 or 11 personnel. Cover Orange will only be run with a 4 man pressure.
RULES: It allows us to show our opponents offense a different pre-snap alignment that will hopefully create some confusion for the
quarterback. It allows us to bring pressure from the middle and edge of our opponents formations. This coverage allows us to be
aggressive versus the run with our safeties even though we are showing a 2 Deep look. We are great versus 4 verticals, and our 2
Deep look safeties can be extremely aggressive on the #1 receivers depending on the read of the #2 receivers. In regards to coverage,
our FS will make a Lucy or Roger call to determine our 2 Deep pre-snap alignment. He will then read the #2 receiver to his side
and play accordingly. The Dog to the FS will be a Curl to Flat defender. He can play the flat route of #1 aggressively to his side. The
Dog away will give an Im Gone call to the Bat to his side. He will then read the #2 receiver to his side and play accordingly. The
Corners will be responsible for the outside s of the field to their side, allowing them to be aggressive versus the curl, out, and post
routes of #1. We will have 2 Linebackers that will not be involved in the blitz. The Bat to the Im Gone call side will be
responsible for the Curl/Flat area. The remaining Linebacker will have the Final 3.
WEAKNESS: We can be exploited in the flat area to the Dogs side that gives the Im Gone call. The Bat might be late getting to this area.
ADJUSTMENTS: We will check to COVER GRAY if we get a 2 back Twins formation.

COVER YELLOW
THEORY: COVER YELLOW is a true 5 under 2 deep pass coverage. This coverage can be run versus any offensive formation or offensive
personnel. For example, 21 or 11 personnel. Cover Yellow will only be run with a 3 or 4 man pressure.
RULES: It allows us to show our opponents offense a different pre-snap alignment that will hopefully create some confusion for the
quarterback. It allows us to bring pressure from the middle and edge of our opponents formations. This coverage allows us to be
aggressive versus the run with our corners and safeties even though we are showing a 2 Deep look. We are great versus 4 verticals,
and our 2 Deep look safeties can be extremely aggressive on the #1 receivers depending on the read of the #2 receivers. In regards to
coverage, our FS will make a Lucy or Roger call to determine our 2 Deep pre-snap alignment. He will then read the #2 receiver to
his side and play accordingly. The Dog to the FS will be a Curl to Flat defender. He can play the flat route of #1 aggressively to his
side. The Dog away will give an Im Gone call to the Bat to his side. He will then read the #2 receiver to his side and play
accordingly. Both of the safeties showing the 2 Deep look will be responsible for the fade routes of the #1 receivers. The Corners
will play a soft technique or hard technique depending on the release of the #2 receiver to their side. We will have 2 Linebackers
that will not be involved in the blitz. The Bat to the Im Gone call side will be responsible for the Curl/Flat area. The remaining
Linebacker will have the Final 3.
WEAKNESS: We can be exploited in the hole area in the middle of the formation behind the linebackers and in front of the safeties.

MONEY PACKAGE
THEORY: Our MONEY PACKAGE consists of us taking a Linebacker out of the game and inserting another ($) FS. We will call our extra
FS the money ($) player. The Money Package is a down & distance/personnel type of defense. This package will primarily be used
on long yardage situations and only versus certain types of personnel. For example, 3 rd and 20+, 2nd and 18+, or 10 personnel. This
package is designed for us to be able to play the pass more effectively because we have substituted an extra defensive back into the
game. As a staff, we are predicting that the down and distance situation is going to be a pass. We will still use our same blitz and
coverage terminology with this package. Even though the Money Package will not contain all of our calls that we have in base
defense, the transition from base to Money should not be confusing.
RULES: We will run only certain coverages and blitzes with this package. The blitzes and coverages that we will use are listed below:

BLITZ PACKAGES

COVERAGES

4 MAN (BUCK)
DIG PINCH
AMMO
BIRD
STORM

1 FLY
2 FLY
BLACK
BLUE
0
GREEN

WEAKNESS: With our Money Package we can be weak versus the run or QB Draw.
ADJUSTMENTS: Our Dogs will be adjusters to a Trips formation in 1Fly and 2 Fly. In all other blitzes the FS and $ will play the base rules for
each coverage. In Brown coverage both the FS and $ will cover the #2 receivers. In Black or Blue the FS or $ that are not in
man coverage will be the free deep 1/3 player. In Green, the $ safety will come down and be the 3 Hole player. However, if
we have a Trips formation the FS will be the 3 Hole player and the $ will be the deep middle safety. The FS will always go to
the passing strength of the formation.
