LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY

DEVELOPMENT

Development of Language
There is nothing more remarkable than the

emergence of language in children.

A baby can go from his

first birth cry (his

first sound) to producing coos and screeches

to recognizable syllables to saying simple
words then phrases to suddenly producing
full sentences in just a short matter of time.
Language

development begins before a

child is even born, as a fetus is able to
identify the speech and sound patterns
of the mother's voice.

Development of Sound Patterns

Characteristic of an infants
undifferentiated mass activity

life

is

Every muscle is exercised in random fashion,

i.e., legs, arms, eyes, toes, etc.

Vocal apparatus is a muscular system and it

joins the random activity.

Nondirected and uncontrolled movement of jaws,

lips, tongue and vocal cords produces various sounds;
relaxed muscles produces quite different sounds.

is a result of purely
chanced conditions of the physiological
state of the infant.

Some investigators suggested that within

the first 2-3 months, babies make all
the sound that human voices can produce.
All normal babies, notwithstanding
culture or race, produce
