OMG,IDT

Type of Drill ships

Anchor-Moored :
Station keeping by Anchor-mooring
Suitable for 1500m WD.
Dynamically-Positioned (DP) :

Advantages :

Suitable where jack ups can not operate.

Easy movement from one to other location.

Dis-Advantages :

Affected by weather conditions

Rig experiences many type of motions

OMG,IDT

Semi-Submersible Rig
Hull consists of vertical columns attached to the
horizontal pontoons.
Buoyancy from ballasted watertight pontoons
located below ocean surface.
While drilling, water filled lower-hull provide stability.
Used in water depth 30m to 3000 m.
Anchor moored and Dynamically positioned.

OMG,IDT

SEMI-SUBMERSIBLE RIGS

OMG,IDT

Semi- sub : Advantages

More suitable for rough & harsh environment
Low downtime in rough weather than in drillships
Operating deck located high , above sea level
due to good stability of the design
With its hull structure submerged at a deep draft,
Semis less affected by wave loadings.

OMG,IDT

Semi-Sub : Dis-advantages
Prone to capsizing as CG keeps moving up
with addition of load on top deck during ops.
Semis: Costly operations/ Expensive to build
Less payload (Cargo) capacity than drill ships

OMG,IDT

Semi-Submersibles: Rough Sea

Hull

OMG,IDT

Hull

A Watertight structure ( 25 ft. Thick ).

Supports / Houses the equipments.

When afloat, provides buoyancy &
supports the weight of legs / footings
(spud cans)/equipment /variable load.

OMG,IDT

Bigger Hull : Advantage

More variable load & equipments can
be carried, especially in afloat mode
(Increased deck space & buoyancy ).

Roomier machinery space. More

space on main deck for pipes & work.

OMG,IDT

Bigger Hull : Disadvantage

Negative effects of higher wind, wave
and current loads.
Require larger capacity jacks to elevate
and hold Unit.

OMG,IDT

Hull shape : Normally Triangular

OMG,IDT

Legs & Footings

Are steel structures

Support hull in Elevated mode

Provide stability to resist lateral- loads.

OMG,IDT

Leg

Hull :

Spud cans
OMG,IDT

Legs & Footings

When rig is towed ; Fully retracted legs
may extend over 400 feet above water.
Footings needed to increase soil bearing
area thereby reducing reqd. soil strength.

OMG,IDT

Spud - Cans

OMG,IDT

Spud Cans : Advantages

Useable on variety of sea beds e.g. Hard &
Soft soil sea beds.
Sloping bottoms (may be sensitive to large
slopes on hard soils) digs in for stability.
Some rigs can retract spud cans flush into
hull to permit easy dry transport of Unit.

OMG,IDT

Spud can : Disadvantages

Exhibit larger bottom bearing pressure and

increased soil penetrations than mat Units.

Spud cans leave impressions

in soft soil

seabed.
May cause damage where pipelines exist

OMG,IDT

Spud cans : Disadvantages

When another J/up comes on same
location,spud can impressions induce horizontal
forces on one or more legs {Unless new can
slides in old impression}
Maintenance lead to downtime & risk :
Sagar-Samrat Accident.

OMG,IDT

Jack-Up : Advantages
Provides a fixed platform.
Initial cost comparatively less.
Can work in soft bottom areas.
Withstand hurricane type of storms better.
Can drill in water depth of about 300 feet.
Operating rents lower than floater, but high
end Jack-ups ; day-rates higher.
OMG,IDT

Jack-Up : Disadvantages
Difficult and risky to tow.
Legs to be laid down for long moves.
Too many moving parts in jacking system
Water depth limitation.

OMG,IDT

J-up : Independent-leg
Spud can at the bottom of leg.
Spud can exert 3500-5000 lbs/ft2 bearing load.
Each leg can be lowered independently.
Each leg may have different penetration.
Can operate in firm & uneven bottoms.
Preloading done for Stability and Safety

OMG,IDT

Cantilever Jack-up : Close up

OMG,IDT

Mat type Rig : Advantages

All legs connected to a common footing-Mat.
Designed to operate in bottom slope of 11to21.
Derrick can be leveled by putting shims.
Suits lesser bearing pressure 500-600 lbs/ft 2
thus can operate in soft sea bed bottom

OMG,IDT

Jack up : Mat Type

OMG,IDT

Advantages: Mat-Rig
Can operate in water-depths: 4-7m / 75-125m.
Mat footings exert less bearing pressure on soil
than Spud-Can due to larger contact at sea floor
Beneficial where soil cannot support high bearing
loads.

OMG,IDT

Disadvantages: Mat-Rig
Not useable on uneven sea-beds/large slopes.
On bottoms with obstructions - Pipelines/debris
Have more drag while under tow.
Towing speed is less (Half).

OMG,IDT

Rig Equipments
3-Sub groups ;
1. Marine

Equipment

2. Mission Equipment
3. Elevating Equipment

OMG,IDT

Marine Equipments
Equipment / Systems not related to the Mission
Equipment (i.e. Drilling Equipment).
Similar to any sea vessel, regardless of its form
or function such as D/Engines, Electricalequipments, Communication-equipments - Radar,
safety equipments - Lifeboats etc.
Necessary for supporting
personnel
equipments involved in Mission.
OMG,IDT

and

Mission Equipment

The Equipment and Systems necessary

the Jack Up to complete its Mission.

Eg : Derricks , Mud-Pumps , Piping , Control

Systems , Production-Equipment , Cranes and
Alarms-Systems etc.

OMG,IDT

for

Elevating Equipment

Equipments & systems necessary to

raise, lower, and lock-off legs and hull.

Usually air gap kept more than 18-20 mtrs

(50ft) depending upon sea conditions at
the location.

Punch through : J-up Rig

Soils bearing capacity increases with depth. When
a soil layer underley by relatively weaker layer,
there is a rapid reduction of soil strength.
When spud can reaches this interface, weaker soil
gives way and leg moves downward faster than
jacking system is capable of lowering it .
When the leg moves downward at a speed greater
than the jacking system is capable of, Hull rotates,
legs tilt and bend , causing hull to sway.
OMG,IDT

Punch
through:
Jack Up
Rig

OMG,IDT

Punch through : Eventuality

Severe Punch-thru can result in serious
damage to legs, hull and jacking system . In
extreme cases, rig may capsize.
Process continues until either the soil
bearing capacity or hull buoyancy arising
from the hull entering the water increase
sufficiently to reach equilibrium.

OMG,IDT

Punch through : Precautions

During preloading, preparedness in the event of

rapid penetration of one or multiple legs is
necessary : With min. Air Gap (1-2mtrs).

Various preload techniques eg. single-leg

preloading / Jacking with min. air gap reduce
risk of adverse effects, when rapid penetration
occurs.

OMG,IDT

Preloading / Soil Penetration

Rig is preloaded for max. load (extreme storm

conditions /or operating conditions) without
experiencing additional leg penetration or
soil failure.

Rig is preloaded at new location to confirm

that soil is capable of withstanding max.
expected load ( 2000 Tons / Leg )

OMG,IDT

Jack-Up Rig Move

Jacking System;
Rack & Pinion arrangement driven by high
power motors {40HP x 12Nos.} on each leg.

The jack up is maneuvered ;

1.By towing to location with legs up & hull floating
2.Legs are then jacked down onto the seafloor.
3.Then "preloading" takes place at location.
4.Thereafter, entire barge is jacked up above
water to a predetermined height ie."Air-Gap .
