FUTURE FORMS

.INTRODUCTION • The Future in English can be expressed in many different ways: – – – – – – – – Will Going to Present continuous Present simple Be + infinitive Future continuous Future Perfect Future in the past: was / were going to / would + verb.

Will • Will is used to talk about a future action or event at the point of decision. – I’ll bring you half a cup of coffee • Will is used to make predictions about the future. – I will finish the exercise in ten minutes • Will is used to make promises – I will be a brilliant student (the rest of this year) .

– Watch out! A zombie is going to bite you. Sometimes it is used to talk about plans and arrangements based on intentions. especially when we can see that the event is imminent. . – Considering the economic recession.Going to • Going to is used to talk about intentions. – I’m going to buy a new car next week • Going to is also used to talk about future events in actions based on present evidence. it is quite certain that I’m going to lose my job.

– Why are you flying to London next weekend? .Present Continuous • The present continuous is used to talk about plans and arrangements for the future. – We’re playing a football match tomorrow evening. A time reference often makes the future meaning clear.

Present simple • The present simple is used to talk about timetables and schedules. before. until. . – We will call you as soon as we’ve got the money – I’ll tidy my room before my parents arrive. as soon as. – The match starts at 15:30 • The present simple is used with future reference with subordinate classes after time conjunctions such as when.

It is used in rules or constructions. – The leader of the opposition is to discuss the new law in the parliament – Employees are not to smoke in the workplace . It is particularly common in news reports. or to talk about official plans.Be + Infinitive • Be + infinite is formal.

Future perfect • The future perfect looks forward to a future time and then looks back from that point. – By the end of the month. I will have run out of money. .

.Future in the past: was / were going to / would + verb • These forms are used to look back to a past time and talk about the future as it was at that past time. – By the time I finished my exam I knew I was going to pass it.
