Introduction

FEM is a numerical method for solving

problems in structural analysis, heat
transfer, fluid flow, mass transport, and
magnetism
For complicated geometries, loading
and material properties, analytical
solutions of ordinary and partial
differential equations are not possible
or extremely difficult. Hence a
numerical method like FEM.

Introduction (contd.)

Discretization modeling a body by

dividing it into an equivalent system of
smaller bodies or finite elements
Formulation Equations of each unit or
element is formulated and then
combined to obtain the solution of the
whole body
Elements are interconnected by nodes
or nodal points
