attention to their ideas about what is needed to be a successful teacher. How do

shared in Chapter 2 reveal the demands of the teaching profession and the need for
reflection. Respond to the following questions:
1.Explain what it means to be a reflective practitioner. Whose teaching story in this
chapter did you most relate to? Why?
2.Which story did your find the most instructive for your own teaching philosophy?
My Personal Teaching Philosophy. Write a 2-3 page paper describing your personal
teaching philosophy at this point. Are you an essentialist? A progressive? A social
reconstructionist? A mix of several types? How and why? How do the learning
theories presented in Chapter 4 influence your philosophy? How do these learning
theories provide for meeting the diverse needs of your students?
The Gift of Diversity. Your text states: The most important theme of this chapter is
that differences among students are a gift to welcome in your classroom, not a barrier
to overcome (Koch, 2012). Identify and briefly describe 5 types of diversity presented
in Chapter 5 of your text. Which areas of student diversity pose the most challenges
for you as a future teacher? How will you meet those challenges and welcome those
differences in your classroom?

opportunity to view second graders from diverse ethnic backgrounds collaborating on
a special project. Based upon your viewing of this video and your reading of Chapter
8 in the text, please respond to the following questions:
In what ways does this American classroom feel like a global classroom?
Classroom Communities and Academic Success. We know from recent studies that
children who feel a sense of identity within a group are the most well-adjusted and
successful in school. The opportunity to participate as a contributing member of a
community helps children to become successful learners, problem solvers, and
decision makers. Chapter 9 of your text discusses characteristics of a classroom
community. Summarize these characteristics and explain why they promote academic
success for students. Discuss what strategies you will employ as a teacher to create
a learning community.
High-Stakes Testing. Read the article Why Has High-Stakes Testing so Easily Slipped
Into Contemporary American Life? by Nichols and Berliner. Based upon your reading
of this article and information in your text, do you agree with the issues presented in
this article? Why or why not? Give specific examples to support your opinions.
Final Paper
For the final paper, you will demonstrate an understanding of the complex set of
issues that must be considered as you embark on your professional preparation to
become a classroom teacher. In addition to the requirements of skills and knowledge,
your own pedagogy is essential to your future endeavors. In this paper you will
examine and discuss a variety of issues and trends in education and consider those
issues in relation to your own pedagogy. Throughout the text the author has asked
you to consider whether you are a good fit for this profession. A critical and in-depth
discussion of each area must be included.
