WHY ARE THERE WAR CRIMES?

WAR CRIMES 
The first war crimes trials were held after

WWII in Nuremberg and in Tokyo  The atrocities seen in WWII were on a greater scale than seen in previous wars  The Nuremberg and Tokyo Trials were attempts by the Allies to hold German and Japanese leaders accountable for the policies and tactics they had used during the war  A major criticism of these trials was that it was just ³victors justice´

WAR CRIMES-Ad Hoc Tribunals 
International Criminal

Tribunal for Yugoslavia (ICTY)  International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR)  Ad hoc tribunals established by the UN Security Council to prosecute war crimes committed during the Bosnian and Rwandan conflicts

WAR CRIMES
International Criminal Court  It would be a permanent institution with powers to prosecute war crimes in any state that has signed the statute governing its creation  It has not been established yet  The US and China and many other countries are attempting to block the establishment of this court
