Wal-Mart,

Clarence Saunders opened the first Piggly Wiggly supermarket in 1916 and
introduced the concept of Self Serving Store. He patented the concept in 1917.
The first true supermarket was opened by ex-Kroger employee Michael J Cullen on
Aug, 4th 1930 in a 6000 sft. garage in New York. The store operated under the
slogan Pile it high. Sell it low
In the 1960s Trading Stamps changed the pricing structure of supermarkets.
Supermarkets started to gain more patrons because of the trading stamps. But then
everyone started offering them. By the 1970s Supermarkets had to raise prices in
order to off set the losses that resulted from offering trading stamps
That led to the emergence of Discount stores in 1980s.
The first department store was opened in Paris in1838 by Aristide Boucicaut
called Bon Marche

Fred Meyer (1922) (now Kroger) the first hypermarket was opened in 1931 at Oregon
