Need for
CAD/CAM:
To increase productivity of the designer
To improve quality of the design
To improve communications
To create a manufacturing database
To create and test tool paths and optimize them
To help in production scheduling and MRP models
To have effective shop floor control

CAD:
Computer-aided design (CAD)
is the use of computer systems
to assist in the creation,
modification, analysis, or
optimization of a design.

CAD/CAM History :
The actual application of CAD/CAM in industry, academia and
government is only approximately 30 years old. Formal
courses in CAD and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) were
introduced in 1970s.
1960s:
Development in Interactive computer graphics research
Sketchpad system developed by Ivan Sutherland in 1962
CAD term coined
