Scientific Evaluation
Facts
– most (e-)learning courses are not properly evaluated – evaluation ≠ assessment ≠ validation

= scientific quantification
– strict scientific standards how-to do it properly

Scientific Evaluation
3 levels:
– challenge form of training
• • • • • • given the learning objectives and the learners e-learning? if so, which one? to blend? how? individual (cognitive/brain architecture) environment (culture, organisation) change the general approach!! field data collection, statistics, controls, etc.

– analyse learning material

– quantify actual impact

Depth of Processing
– Qualitative Approach (meaningful way) – Engage learners, so they understand & remember

‘Spoon-feed the learners’ brain!’ ...but even if you reduce & reformat there are still important issues...

Human Memory
3)

Encoding Specificity
– Learning environment counts – Presentation & delivery matters

‘It’s not what you teach, but what they learn that counts!’ ...and there are plenty more!!

Human Memory
Let’s apply them back to our example of tarrifs:

1) Cognitive Load (Chunking)

2) Depth of Processing (Meaningful)

3) Encoding Specificity (Context)
