GREEN

BUILDING
CONCEPT

INTRODUCTION
Global

warming and other environmental phenomenon are of the

major concern of the whole world.
Energy demand of the countries including INDIA is increasing
day by day.
For meeting that energy demand every country is expanding
there power pant capacity & optimizing the various options to
increase the energy generation capacities.
The best option to meet the energy demand and supply
requirements is to GO GREEN.
Here it is a small concept presented in this seminar to save
environment & for energy conservation

GREEN BUILDING CONCEPT

Why is Green Building important?

5000kg

of waste are typically thrown into a landfill

during the construction of a 2000sqft home
The buildings consume more than twice as much
energy as all the cars in the
Buildings account for 68% of total electricity
consumption
Buildings use 80% of total drinking water
consumption
Indoor levels of pollution are commonly 2 to 5 times
higher than outdoor pollution levels
Buildings in the United States contribute 38.9% of
the nations total carbon dioxide emission, 39% of
total energy use, 12% of the total water consumption,
71%of total energy consumption

What is Green Building?

Installing

a solar panel on your roof top does

not make your building GREEN alone
EPA definition: Green or sustainable
building is the practice of creating healthier
and more resource-efficient models of
construction, renovation, operation,
maintenance, and demolition.

The

concept of Green Building concentrates on

mainly two points
a. Increasing the efficiency with which buildings
use energy, water and materials
b. Reducing building impacts on human health
and environment, through better site selection,
design, construction operations, maintenance
and removal throughout the complete life
cycle
Going Green Building constructions avails us
many environmental, economical as well as
Social benefits

Sustainable Site Selection

There

should be easily availability of public

transport and convenience so as to cut don
energy consumption for transportation.
Rehabilitation of sites damaged by
environmental contamination is a better option
than any new piece of land where large amount
of energy and resource is needed to make the
land worthy of building on.
Already existing landscape, soil and natural
features should be protected.

Materials & Resources

Sustainable

construction materials are chosen keeping in mind

various characteristics like

1. Zero or low toxicity

2. High recyclability
3. Zero or low gassing of harmful air emission
4. Durability
5. Reused or recycled content
6. Sustainably harvested materials
Dimensional

planning and other efficiency strategies are used to

reduce the construction costs
Construction and demolition materials can be reused & recycled for
e.g. inert demolition materials can be used as base course landfills
Use of materials that are locally available is preferred over materials
that need to be brought from distant
Industrial waste based bricks and blocks, Phospho-Gypsum based
blocks can be used for masonry structures

Water Efficiency
Installation

of water efficient or low flow equipment in

kitchens & bathrooms to reduce consumption.
Incorporating waste water management technologies like
dual plumbing for using recycled water in toilet flushing
or using water conservation fixtures such as low pressure
shower heads, self closing nozzles on hoses.
Use of micro irrigation techniques instead of high
pressure sprayers
Recirculation system for centralised hot water
distribution
Using treated or non potable water for site irrigation
Integrating rain water harvesting system in building
design to ensure maximum possible utilization of rain
water.

Energy Efficiency
Development

of design strategies o
provide room for natural lighting
Passive design strategies like
passive solar design, building
shape and orientation are used for
efficient energy performance

Indoor Environment
Quality
Indoor environment quality is a very important parameters
to be considered for Green Buildings as it directly affects the
health of the occupants.
Suitable paints, adhesives, composite wood, carpets should
be selected that emits low or VOCs
Selection of microbial resistant materials is necessary to
prevent indoor microbial contamination is necessary
Proper heating & cooling system that ensures adequate
ventilation, fresh air within duct filtration system should be
installed to improve the quality of indoor environment.
Ventilation is a very important factor in maintaining healthy
indoor air quality as it is responsible for air exchange

There

are nine indexes of defining Green

Buildings

1. Green index: It includes ecology-greening, wallgreening, wall-greening watering, artificial structure

greening technique, water-draining greening
technique and windproof greening technique.
2. Daily energy-saving index: It includes building
constructions with energy-effeciency, proper rate of
window-opening, a sun shading board, glass
openings, heat insulation, air density, building
structure, material, roof structure and a curtain of
wall.
3. Water resources index: It includes the machine of
water saving, the plan of water use, rainwater reuse
and primary water source.
4. Biodiversity index: It includes the community
green-net system, earth-saving system, ecology
lakes, ecology waters, ecology side slope, ecology
palisade design and porous environment.

5. Carbon dioxide reduction index: It includes simple

construction modeling, indoor decoration, reasonable
structure system, reduced weight of structure and the
usage of the wood material.
6. Waste reduction index: It includes good use of the
reused building material, soil balance, dry partitions,
bathrooms and the reduction of air pollution.
7. Base water index: It includes permeable floor, scenestaying permeable lakes, permeable-staying lot,
permeable well, permeable cube and artificial
structure staying.
8. Sewage and trash improvement index: It includes
rainwater and sewage diversion, improvement on
waste collection field, wetlands, wastewater
treatment and kitchen waste compost.
9. Interior index: It includes indoor pollution control,
indoor air purification equipment, green paint and
Green Building material.
