Printing = Multiple images

Positive / Negative Space


Positive space is the
object and Negative
space is the space
around the object.
In relief Printing you
usually CARVE OUT the
NEGATIVE space.

Brayer and Plate


Brayer: A rubber
hand roller used to
spread ink.
Plate: the device that
carries the image to
be printed and is
applied directly to
paper.

Registration Marks
Marks made to a surface to help with
alignment.

Serializing a series
The naming,
signing, and
numbering of
a print.

Print # over total


amount of prints
i.e. 1/5, 2/5, 3/5

Process

Trace original sketch use a soft pencil

Transfer to block

Ready to cut

Angle of blade and pressure


determine the depth of the cut

Pay attention to
the direction you
are cutting in
and WHAT YOU
ARE cutting out
(you are cutting
out the WHITE!)

Inking the brayer

Inking the block

You can use a spoon or a clean


roller to bond the ink to the paper.

It may take a few tries to get it right

Serialize it,
clean it, let it dry.
Repeat.
