2016 RIO

The2016 Summer Olympics(Portuguese:Jogos Olmpicos de Vero de 2016),[a]officially known

as theGames of the XXXI Olympiadand commonly known asRio 2016, is a major international
multi-sport eventin the tradition of theOlympic Gamesas governed by the
International Olympic Committee, being held inRio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Games formally run from
5 August to 21 August 2016, though the first eventthegroup stageinwomen's footballbegan
on 3 August 2016, two days before theopening ceremony.
More than 11,000 athletes from 206National Olympic Committees(NOCs), including first time
entrantsKosovoandSouth Sudan, are taking part.[1][2]With 306 sets of medals, the games features
28Olympic sports, includingrugby sevensandgolf, which were added by the
International Olympic Committeein 2009. These sporting events are taking place at 33 venues in
the host city as well as at five venues in the cities ofSo Paulo(Brazil's largest city),Belo Horizonte
,Salvador,Braslia(Brazil's capital), andManaus.
These are the first Summer Olympic Games under the IOC presidency ofThomas Bach.[1]The host
city ofRio de Janeirowas announced at the121stIOC Sessionheld inCopenhagen,Denmark, on 2
October 2009. Rio became the first South American city to host the Summer Olympics. These are
the first games to be held in aPortuguese-speaking country, the first to be held entirely during the
winter (the2000games began on 15 September but continued past thespring equinox), the first
since1968to be held in Latin America, and the first since2000(and third overall) to be held in the
