The creation of the steam engine caused the rise of
mills and factories during the Industrial Revolution

1903 First Flight

Engineering

The Wright brothers and the

first flight
Controlled, powered flight had seemed
impossible until on the 17th December
1903. At 10:35 a.m., when the first heavierthan-air, machine powered flight in the world
was performed. In a flight lasting only 12
seconds and covering just 37 meters.

Engineering

The key to the Wright Brother's

success was engineering skill in
combining trial and error with
systematic experiments and
theoretical development.
Having limited resources they
showed great scientific ingenuity.

Design Engineering

The essence of engineering is

design.

Design Engineering

Need All design begins with

a clearly defined need
recognising and understanding
the nature of society, economics
and humanitys needs.
It is a multidisciplinary task

Design Engineering

Vision All designs arise

from a creative response to a
need

Design Engineering

Delivery All designs result

in a system, product or project
that meets the need
Deliverables
Quality Control

Design Engineering

Sectors include transport,
energy, water and the

communications and education.

Professional Responsibility
and Engineering Ethics
The rationale for teaching ethics to
engineers and computer scientists seems
fairly obvious. Their work (developing,
designing and implementing
technologies) has an enormous impact
on the world.

Engineering

An engineer's conduct toward other

engineers, toward employers, toward
clients, and toward the public is an
essential part of the life of a professional
