US STEEL TOWER

Dimension Details
U.S. Steel Tower is also known as the
Steel Building (formerly USX Tower).
It is a 64-story, 256.34 m (841.0 ft.)
skyscraper.
with 2,300,000 sq. ft. (210,000 m^2)
of leasable space.
It is located in 600 Grant Street in
downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Important Facts
The tower's shape is a triangle with indented corners.
U.S. Steel Tower has been the tallest building in Pittsburgh since
1970, and was Pennsylvania's tallest until the completion ofOne
Liberty Placein Philadelphia in 1987.
In the initial planning stages, the U.S. Steel Corporation seriously
considered making this development the world's tallest building.
At the time of its completion this was the world's tallest building
outside of New York and Chicago.
This building has the largest roof at its height or higher in the
world.
TheSun-Telegraph Buildingand dozens of other low-rise buildings
formerly stood on this site.
This was the first building to use liquid-fireproofed columns.

Short History

In the planning stages, U.S. Steel executives

considered making the building the world's
tallest, but settled on 840ft. (260m) and
the distinction of being the tallest building
outside New York City and Chicago.
However, it eventually lost even that
distinction to newer buildings erected across
the United States. Prior to 1970, the tallest
building in Pittsburgh, at 44 stories, was the
Gulf Building, now known asGulf Tower. In
2014, the elevators were modernized by
"Schindler PORT"
United States Steel Corporations world
headquarters is located in the U. S. Steel
Tower, which is situated along Grant St. in
downtown Pittsburgh, Pa., and showcases
the companys COR-TEN steel. When its
construction was completed in 1971, the
building was considered to be an
engineering masterpiece and was featured
in many architectural and engineering
magazines.

Structure Columns

U.S. Steel deliberately placed the massive steel

columns on the exterior of the building to
showcase a new product calledCor-tensteel.
Cor-ten resists the corrosive effects of rain,
snow, ice, fog, and other meteorological
conditions by forming a coating of dark brown
oxidation over the metal, which inhibits deeper
penetration and doesn't need painting and
costly rust-prevention maintenance over the
years.
The initial weathering of the material resulted in
a discoloration of the surrounding city
sidewalks, as well as other nearby buildings. A
cleanup effort was orchestrated by the
corporation once weathering was complete to

history by being the first to use liquidfilledfireproofcolumns.

Steel Parts
The tower contains over 44,000 U.S. tons
(40,000 metric tons) of structural steel, and
almost an acre of office space per
floor.Currently, the largest tenant of the
building isUPMCwho occupies 500,000
square feet (46,000m2) of office space within
the tower.
In 2007 UPMC added signage to the top of the
tower for the first time in its history, a move
that was criticized by some involved in the
construction of the structure.

Water filled Columns

Although accepted for bridges, etc., exposing structural
Cor-Ten in a building was not possible using standard
construction methods because steel needed to be
protected by concrete or an applied insulation to meet
the fire-protection requirements ofbuilding codes.
Fire protection was achieved for the 18 columns of this
tower by making them hollow and filled with a
water/antifreeze/rust inhibitor mixture, a technique
patented in the 19th century. In another building cited
in 1970, the horizontal beams were also hollow and
interconnected with the columns, the entire system
tested to be leak-proof.
