INTRODUCTION
Tremendous popularity of smart phones and tablets,
there is an explosive growth in mobile traffic demand.
Many researches from networking and financial sectors
forecast ,an avg a mobile user consume 7GB of traffic
per month.
Solutions: i) upgrading the network
ii) adopt usage-based price
iii)OFFLOADING
5G provides higher data rates and provide cooperative
communication.

DEVICE-TO-DEVICE(D2D)
COMMUNICATIONS
D2D communications commonly refer to the technology that enable devices to
communicate directly without or less involment of network .

COMPARISION BETWEEN VARIOUS

TECHNOLOGIES

DRAWBACK OF CURRENT
TECHNOLOGIES
Security:

Less robust than those used in public cellular system

Unlicensed

spectrum :No centralized control and cause

interference

Manual

pairing: Serious stumbling block for autonomous,

dynamic proximity-based services.

Independence

from cellular network: They have to run in

parallel with cellular radio operation which significantly
drain battery.

Performance:

Provide less throughput because of less data

rate and less coverage area.

Energy

Efficiency: Scanning and require to synchronize

between transmission and reception signals.

DESIGN ASPECTS
D2D communication is established in LTE-A network
having SAE architecture.
In order to provide communication link between the
device, first the devices has to know about each other.
Efforts have been made by wireless engineers to meet
this ,they pioneerd a mobile communication system
known as FlashinQ.
D2D communication involves 2 steps
i) Device Discovery
ii)Direct communication

DEVICE DISCOVERY

D2D provides 2 methods of discovery ,they are

i) Direct Discovery(non network assisted)

ii)Evolved Packet Core (EPC)-level Discovery(network assisted)

Direct discovery:UE search the nearby UEs autonomously.

Transmitting

party sends reference

Signal called beacon signal into

the Air and the receiving party
should respond to that.
Eg: Social networking application
(EPC)-level Discovery(network
explained in two ways.
i)Priori scheme
ii)Posteriori scheme

assisted):It

can

be

PRIORI SCHEME

Devices themselves detects D2D candidates before the start of

the communication session.

Network assigns beacon resources to the devices and beacon are

broadcast in the coverage area of the cell, so D2D devices can
readily find one another

POSTERIORI SCHEME
When

cellular communication in ongoing between

the D2D enabled devices.
Devices agree on a token that is unique and once
token is established devices register the token at the
serving eNB

PROSE MANAGMENT
When D2D UEs are in
coverage, ProSe services
should be under continuous
network management and
control
, D2D UEs may enter out-ofcoverage area, in which the
network loses its control
capability. For that two
alternative control topologies
are shown in Figure.

DIRECT COMMUNICATION

Communication takes place according to 5G specification.

Several direct communication modes are defined in, including
unicast, multicast, and broadcast. To support UEUE
communication may require many physical layer changes and new
standardization efforts, as detailed below.
i)Modulation Format: LTE A uses transmitter(SC-FDMA)
receiver( OFDMA)

ii)Power control: eNB takes power control

iii)Resource management: Network is responsible RM. Network can
allocate the resources statically or dynamically.
iv)HARQ Operation: it can be direct or indirect.
v) Signaling: manages the resource allocation.

ADVANTAGES AND APPLICATIONS

Public

Safety like fire emergency and ambulance services

Vehicle-To-Vehicle
Communication: It will provide
information about Collision avoidance and communication
range.
Multiuser cooperative communication (MUCC):Benefited
user (BU) is in an area with poor cellular signal and another
user is in an area with good cellular signal. This user may help
BU to improve its signal and act as a supporting user (SU)
Natural disasters: The cellular network may damage in that
time D2D communication can be emergency network.
Security: Data is not conveyed via internet coulds and these
not store anywhere .It will present in devices.
contd

APPLICATIONS

CONCLUSION
D2D is an emerging wireless technology for direct
communication. It is likely to present in LTE rel 12.
It will provide public safety, reduce work of base
station,reduce the traffic data.
But there are some technical issue
i) UE-UE link is new concept and technology are
designed and optimized for NB-UE links
ii) Dual mobility problem.
iii) In UE-UE link antenna height is less
iv) Pricing is also a challenge.
