GAUGES AND GAUGE

DESIGN

LIMIT GAUGES
 These are widely used in industries.
 As a part contains two permissible limits [lower and higher]
two gauges are required to check the dimensions of each
part.
 These gauges are known as ‘GO’ and ‘NO - GO’ gauges.
 GO gauge checks the maximum metal limit of the part
[MML].
 NO - GO gauges checks the least metal limit of the part [LML].
 For a hole:
MML = lower limit, so GO gauge is used
LML = upper limit, so NO - GO gauge is used.
 For a shaft:
MML = upper limit, so GO gauge is used
LML = lower limit, so NO - GO gauge is used.

 Gauges used for checking holes are called “Plug Gauges”.  Gauges used for checking shafts are called “Snap Gauges”. .

GO plug gauge is equal to ULH.  The size of the NO.PLUG GAUGES  It is used for checking holes. .  The size of the GO plug gauge is equal to LLH.

 The word GO on the go side.  A red color band near the NOT.  Class of tolerance.  Manufacturer’s trade mark.GO or NOT.GO side.  The actual value of tolerance.IDENTIFICATION OF PLUG GAUGES  Nominal size. .  The word NO.GO on the not-go side.

GO ring gauges easily. a red mark or a small groove cut on its periphery.  To identify the NO.GO ring gauge = lower limit size of the shaft.  While checking the shaft.GO will not pass. .RING GAUGES  Mainly used for checking the diameter of shafts having a central hole.  Hole: GO ring gauge = upper limit size of the shaft NO.  Two ring gauges are used separately to check the shaft such as GO ring gauge and NO.GO ring gauge. the GO ring gauge will pass through the shaft and NO.

PROGRESSIVE SNAP GAUGE 3.  Snap gauges are used for both cylindrical and noncylindrical works. DOUBLE ENDED SNAP GAUGE 2.  The diff erent types of snap gauges are: 1.SNAP (OR) GAP GAUGES  These are used for checking shafts or male components. ADJUSTABLE SNAP GAUGE .

.  Double ended snap gauges are used for checking sizes from 3 – 100 mm. the GO anvil is made to upper limit and NO.DOUBLE ENDED SNAP GAUGE  This gauge is having two ends in the form of anvils.  Here also.  It is also known as solid snap gauges.GO anvil is made to lower limit of the shaft.

GO anvils at the same end.  The GO anvil at the front and NO.  It is made of horse shoe shaped frame with I section to reduce the weight of the snap gauges.  Used for checking sizes from 100 – 250 mm. .  So. the diameter of the shaft is checked progressively by these two ends.PROGRESSIVE SNAP GAUGE  It is also called caliper gauge.  Both GO and NO.GO anvil at the rear.

.  The distance between the two anvils is adjusted by means of setscrews.  This adjustment can be made with the help of slip gauges for specifi ed limits of size.ADJUSTABLE SNAP GAUGE  Adjustable snap gauges are used for checking large size shafts made with horseshoe shaped frame of I section.  It has one fi xed anvil and two small adjustable anvils.

GO gauge should be designed to check the minimum material limit. It states that: 1.   . while the NO.TAYLOR PRINCIPLE OF GAUGE DESIGN Limit gauges are designed on the Taylor’s Principle. A GO Gauge should be designed to check the maximum material limit.

e minimum metal conditions [LML]. size. Sizes: GO plug gauge = LLH and NO.]  The NO. 2. etc.GO snap gauge = LLS. The GO gauge should check all the related dimensions [roundness. GO snap gauge = ULS and NO.GO plug gauge = ULH.GO gauge should check only one element of the dimension at a time i. . location.

 The length of the GO plug gauge should not be less than 1.5 times the diameter of the hole.  This prevents inaccuracy in checking straightness or roundness of the hole. . The GO plug gauge should have a full circular section and it should be of full length of the hole to be checked.

It is made in the form of a pin or bar.GO gauge. . shown with dashed lines. For checking a hole having oval shape by a cylindrical NO.

 This leads to an errorness conclusion that the part is within the prescribed limits. . The NO.GO gauge will not enter the hole as the faces of the plug gauge and the hole under inspection overlap each other through the area hatched in the fi gure.  So it is made in the form of pin or bar.

. gauges also cannot be manufactured to the exact sizes and hence some tolerance has to be provided.GAUGE TOLERANCE (OR) MANUFACTURING TOLERANCE  In actual practice.  This is known as gauge tolerance.  The limit gauges are usually provided by a gauge tolerance of 10% of work tolerance.  The inspection gauges should be provided with 5% of work tolerance.
