How can Australians receive access to Justice and legal

representation?
Chapter 3.4.
There is the opportunity to access justice for all Australians.
But not all Australians can get it for many reasons.
Some people may have little to no understanding of the law.
People with limited English may find it difficult to communicate their
problem.
Some people may feel intimidated by lawyers
or may be unable to pay for legal representation.
Our legal system has devised ways of providing access to justice and legal
representation for everyone.

Legal Aid
Provides access to justice.
Without it, some people would not have legal
representation.
Ensures all people can be treated equally by the
law.
To receive a fair trial.
Is for people who cannot afford the cost of hiring a
lawyer.
It is offered by several organisations including legal
aid commissions, community legal centres, and
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander legal services.

Rules are set by individuals and Laws are set by

the government.
The main difference between rules and laws is the
consequences associated with breaking them.
Laws are like the legal version of rules. Whiile
each is developed to invoke a sense of order, fair
play, and safety, the weight of a law is
much heavier than the weight of a rule.
