Present Phase

Philippine Architecture (19602000)

Philippines Search for

National Identity
The Nationalistic fervor inherent in
the Filipinos triggered the impetus
for the search for identity. Gradually
comprehending the philosophy of
modern architecture, the new
buildings that are now rising in our
urban areas tend to forestall a
Filipino architecture maturity.

Cultural Center of the

Philippines
The Cultural Center of the Philippines is the national
center for the performing arts. It is mandated to
promote excellence in the arts through the initiation
and implementation of activities that aim to improve
and elevate standards among cultural workers, artists
and audiences and to recognize the multiplicity and
differences of aesthetic experiences and standards
encompassing the arts from grassroots to those
formulated by academy-trained artists.
It houses several venues for the performing arts as
well as areas for both permanent and changing
exhibits. It serves as home for the country's premier
performing arts groups such as the Ballet Philippines,
the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, Tanghalang
Pilipino and others.

Recognition of UAP (United

Architects of the Philippines)
The United Architects of the Philippines
or UAP is theOfficial Voice for
Architectsthroughout the country. The
UAP was formed through the
unification of three architectural
organizations: the Philippine Institute of
Architects, The League of Philippine
Architects and the Association of
Philippine Government Architects.

Hybrid Modernity
While we dorecognize that modernity inthe
Philippines are still connected and inextricably
linked with modernities from other parts of the
world, the history of the Philippines should not
be merely thought of as an extension of
European modern architecturehistory.Rather,
its culturaland historical specificities gave
riseto an architectural heritage that continues
to takepart in the lives of theFilipinos.By
accepting its unique context and situation then
are we able to produce a historiography that
does not privilege Europe and instead celebrate
the complexities and diversity of each
architecture culture.

Modernism as colonial conquest

-We cannot simply divorce
colonialism from modernism since
most of the ideas of a modern in
architecture came to the Philippines
through the forces of colonialism.
Urbanization and the experiences of a
metropolitan culture, for one, was an
imported concept.

Indigenization
A form of resistance
underscores the localization of
foreign materials.This includes
thereconfiguration of foreign
ideas, motifsand forms into
aformat that is understandable
to thelocal audience.
