SATURATED MAGNETIZING RECATANCE AND FREQUENCY DETERMINATION

Equivalent circuit of an Induction Machine

Equations involved in determination of Xm and F

It should be possible to determine the performance for given capacitance, speed and load conditions knowing
the parameters of the machine.
The analysis is complicated owing to the magnetic saturation in the machine and determination of Xm.
The frequency of SEIG is not similar to the utility grid as in case of GCIG but it generates its own frequency
depending upon the capacitance, machine parameters, prime mover speed and load conditions.
The Xm and F determination can be derived from the impedance loop by separating the real and imaginary
parts. It requires solution of simultaneous linear equations.

GUI Window For Effect of stator resistance on terminal voltage

Conclusion: Enhancing stator resistance leads to drooping characteristics and reduced

power output. Thus, it is advantageous to use minimum possible value of stator
resistance in spite of the fact that its impact is minor.

GUI Window For Effect of leakage reactance on terminal voltage

Conclusion: This parameter is not very sensitive for performance study and its impact is
also minor. For higher loads, the terminal voltage and power output are low for small
leakage reactance. For lighter loads, the terminal voltage and power output are high for
small leakage reactance. Thus leakage reactance must be optimally selected.

GUI Window For Effect of capacitive reactance on terminal voltage

Conclusion: This parameter is very sensitive for performance study and it has high impact. The terminal
voltage and power output reduces with increase in the value of capacitive reactance which ultimately
means higher value capacitor needs to be employed since Xc = (1/jC). However, the designer must
select an optimum valued capacitor bank keeping the economy into consideration for the wanted
outcome.

GUI Window For Effect of magnetizing reactance on terminal voltage

Conclusion: Increase in value of Xm yields higher value of terminal voltage and power
output. This can be done by reduction of air gap or increasing the number of turns. This
impact of this parameter is quite pronounced. Higher values of X m must be selected for
design considerations.

GUI Window For Effect of prime mover speed on terminal voltage

Conclusion: Great emphasis has been paid lately for the application of SEIG for wind power plants. The
prime mover speed under such circumstances is continuously varying. Thus, it becomes essential to
determine the impact of speed on terminal voltage for design of suitable regulators. This parameter is
pretty sensitive for performance study and increase in speed results in higher value of terminal voltage
for the same power output. Thus, SEIG must be operated at higher speeds.

IEEE India Council

GUI Window For Effect of power factor on terminal voltage

Conclusion: This parameter is directly related to the power output and is sensitive.
Higher values of power factor yields higher power output. This can be ensured by
providing more lagging VARs in the lines. This can be made possible by introduction
of higher value of capacitor banks which would also improve the terminal voltage.
