m Employee welfare means the efforts to make

life worth living for workman. Rapid


industrialization have made employees
dependent on capitalists. In such a situation,
employee welfare facilities enable workers to
live a richer and more satisfactory life.
m Employee welfare:- It means anything done for
the comfort and improvement , intellectual or
social of employees, over & above wages paid.
m Employee welfare is defined as such services,
facilities and amenities as adequate canteen,
rest and recreation facilities, rearrangement for
travel etc.
In short it can be said that labour welfare is to
enrich the life of employees and keep them
happy and contented.
m It is a comprehensive term including various
services, facilities & amenities provided to
employees for their betterment.
m It is a dynamic concept. It is flexible and ever
changing process.
m Welfare measures can be provided not only by
employer but by govt. trade union and other
agencies too.
m The basic purpose of labour welfare is to
improve lot of working class.
m It helps in improving recruitment.
m It improves moral & loyality of workers.
m It reduces labour turnover & absenteeism.
m It helps in increasing productivity & efficiency
by improving physical & mental health.
m It helps in improving industrial relation &
industrial peace.

The act provides the following services to workers:

mWashing facilities to male and female workers separately


m Facilities for storing and drying clothes.
m First aid boxes or cupboards.
m Canteens, where there are more than 250 workers.
m ëhelters, rest-rooms and lunch rooms where over 150 workers are
employed.
mWelfare officer , if 500 or more workers are employed.
The act provides for the following :
m Canteen
m Creche
m Recreational facilities for worker and their children
m Educational arrangements
m Housing facilities
m Medical aid
m ëickness allowances and maternity allowances
m Welfare officer
The mine owners are required to make provision
for :

m ëhelter for taking food and rest.


m Canteen
m First aid boxes & first aid rooms
m Welfare officer
mCanteens
mClean,ventilated,well lighted and comfortable rest rooms at every place where
motor transport workers are required to halt at night
mUniforms and raincoat to drivers, conductors time and checkers
mPrescribed amount of washing allowances
mPrescribed medical facilities at operation and halting stations
mFirst and facility in every transport vehicle
It is obligatory on the part of contractor to provide:
m Canteen
m Rest rooms
m Washing facilities
m First aid boxes
There are several agencies involved in labour welfare work.besides central
and state govt. employers, unions and social organisations work as agencies
for extending welfare facilities to the workers .

Labour is an important resource for any organization and to raise their


morale and their productivity, they should be provided with certain
basic amenities and service despite their wages.
