Coliform or other bacteria in drinking or
swimming water will not necessarily make you
ill. However, since these organisms are
present, other disease-causing organisms
may also be present. Health symptoms
related to drinking or swallowing water
contaminated with bacteria generally range
from no ill effects
< = Fecal coliform
bacteria from a polluted stream. The presence
of fecal coliform bacteria in aquatic
environments indicates that the water has
been contaminated with the fecal material of
man or other animals. At the time of
contamination the source water may have
been also contaminated by pathogens or
disease producing bacteria or viruses which
can also exist in fecal material.
 V
2 is short for -- a bacteria (germ) that
causes severe cramps and diarrhea. 2 is a leading cause
of bloody diarrhea. The symptoms are worse in children and
older people, and especially in people who have another
illness. Symptoms start about 7 days after you are infected
with the germ. The first sign is severe abdominal cramps that
start suddenly. After a few hours, watery diarrhea starts. The
diarrhea causes your body to lose fluids and electrolytes
(dehydration). This makes you feel sick and tired. The watery
diarrhea lasts for about a day. Then the diarrhea changes to
bright red bloody stools. The infection makes sores in your
intestines, so the stools become bloody. Bloody diarrhea lasts
for 2 to 5 days. You might have 10 or more bowel movements
a day. Some people say their stools are "all blood and no
stool.
$     (UPEC) is responsible for
approximately 90% of 3 (UTI) seen in
individuals with ordinary anatomy.[15]In ascending infections,

urethra than men, they are 14-times more likely to suffer from
an ascending UTI.
    (crip-toe-spor-ID-ee-um) is
a protozoan, a single-celled parasite that lives in the
intestines of animals and people. This microscopic
pathogen causes a disease called cryptosporidiosis (crip-
toe-spor-id-ee-0-sis). The dormant (inactive) form of
V , called an oocyst (0-o-sist), is excreted
in the feces (stool) of infected humans and animals. The
tough-walled oocysts survive under a wide range of
environmental conditions.

infection can occur through ingestion of dormant
cysts in contaminated water, food, or by the fecal-oral
route (through poor hygiene practices). The Giardia
cyst can survive for weeks to months in cold water[
2
Typhoid fever is an acute illness associated
with fever caused by the
bacteria. It can also be caused by

, a related bacterium that usually
causes a less severe illness. The bacteria
are deposited in water or food by a human
carrier and are then spread to other people in
the area. ß occurs when some
of the Salmonella organisms are not killed by
the normal human immune defenses
( cells). Salmonella then survive
and grow in the human spleen, liver, and
other organs and may reach the blood

   Salmonella can be shed from
the liver to the gallbladder, where they can
continue to survive and be secreted into the
patient's feces for up to a year.
Salmonellosis < characterized

most common disease caused by the
organisms.

þ
(genus)
There are many species in this genus.
They are very difficult to tell apart.
# like all protists, are single-celled organisms.
are the building blocks for all life forms. "Single-celled" means
that amoebas have only one cell for their entire body. A human
body has more cells than you can count.
The inside of an amoeba is a jelly-like fluid called cytoplasm.
Bits of food and other materials float around in the protoplasm.
Amoebas are so tiny that you need a microscope to see them.
They live in water, including lakes, ponds, streams, rivers, and
puddles. Some can even live in the bodies of animals.

#eat bacteria, other protozoans, and tiny

particles of dead plant or animal
They spend most of their time attached to the bottom or to
plants. Sometimes they float freely in the water. They do this as
a "swarm." All the amoebas of the same species will unattach
from the bottom or plants and float around until they land in a
new place and re-attach.
Animals that eat amoeba include feeders, such as
mussels and water fleas.

'Anyone who has been through a high school

science class will likely be familiar with the
term . The process was first
described by a French Scientist in 1748, who
noted that water spontaneously diffused
through a pig bladder membrane into alcohol.
Over 200 years later, a modification of this
process known as reverse osmosis allows
people throughout the world to affordably
convert undesirable water into water that is
virtually free of health or aesthetic

Step 1. The body of a water softener is a tank filled
with resin beads. These beads are covered with
sodium ions. As hard water passes through, the resin
beads act like a magnet, attracting the calcium and
magnesium ions (hardness) in exchange for the
sodium ions.

Step 2. Eventually the resin beads becomes saturated

with minerals ions and have to be ³re-charged.´ This
process is called regeneration, and is conducted by the
control valve on the top of the tank. The control valve is
the brain of the system.

Step 3. During regeneration, a strong brine solution is

flushed through the resin tank, bathing the resin beads in
a stream of sodium ions which replace the accumulated
calcium & magnesium ions (hardness)

S Step 4. The brine solution, carrying the displaced

calcium and magnesium ions is then flushed down the
drain by fresh water. The regenerated resin beads can
be used again and again
