Classless Societies

egalitarian
societies with no terms which distinguish one social class
from another
live by gathering forest products, hunting, exchanging game
or forest products for foodstuffs or brassware and porcelain,
swidden farming, fishing
generally, do not engage in war

Exemplars: Hanunoo Mangyan (Mindoro), Tiruray (Cotabato),


Sulod (Panay), Bukidnon (Negros), Batak (Palawan), Ikalahan
(Nueva Vizcaya), and Ayta communities such as Agta, Aeta, &
Dumagat (Luzon)/Magahat & Ati (Visayas)/ Ata & Mamanua
(Mindanao)
Warrior Societies

societies with a recognized class distinguished by prowess


in battle
pangayaw/mangayaw (raid) as the major occasion for
exercising military skills where captives or heads, or booty
are taken but not territory; slaves are taken in raids(women
& children for labor; men for sale to slave markets)
warrior chief as political leader

Exemplars: Isneg & Kalinga (mengal or maingel) of Cordillera


Luzon, Manobo of Agusan & Cotabato, Mandaya & Bagobo
of Davao, and Bilaan (bagani or magani) of Cotabato.
Petty Plutocracies

societies with a recognized class characterized by


inherited real property
petty- authority is localized/plutocracies- class
of rich men
kadangyan or baknang wealthy class as
demonstrated by their sponsorship of public
prestige feasts

Exemplars: Ifugao, Bontoc, Kankanay and Ibaloy of


Cordillera
Principalities

societies with a recognized ruling class with inherited


rights to assume political office or exercise central
authority
aristocracy (datu/maginoo class) possessed power and
authority to collect taxes, tariffs, fees, dispose property
& delegate authority
enfranchised members of the community are called
sakop

Exemplars: datuship of Awi in Butuan, rajahnates of


Sulayman in Manila & Kolambu in Cebu, and sultanates
of Abu Bakr in Sulu and Sharif Kabungsuan in Cotabato
