Inequality
Kaitlyn King
Womens Empowerment
Poverty affects women and girls around the world majorly. In the past
decade, the international development community has accepted the
business of enabling womens participation in the economy. Women
around the world play a critical role in their families survival and
success. Women make up the majority of the 2 billion unbanked
individuals. Despite having multiple roles in society as consumers,
business owners and employees. there is great income inequality
between men and women. A womans chances of receiving credit are
lower than a mans. Yet, in an increasing number of families, the women
provides much or all of the families income.

Gender discrimination in the workplace is real, not an Urban Legend.

Some people think that women do not get discriminated against or
sexualy harassed, especially in the workplace. Millions of women a day
experience pay inequality, sexual harassment and/or other forms of
gender discrimination at work.
The Health Impact of Gender
inequality
Discrimination against women still occurs in many cultures, having a
negative effect on families living in poverty. Giving girls access to
educational opportunities to encourage literacy is one of the most
effective ways of bridging this gender gap and improving health care.
Even small victories on the march toward equality can make a major
difference in the lives of girls and women living in poverty. According to
a 2011 report from the World Health Organization, denying primary
education to young girls has been shown to negatively impact fertility
rates, birth spacing, health literacy and healthy behaviors.
Gender Equality
One in every six women in the country begins childbearing by the age
of 19. In rural India, only 28% of girls between the ages of 15 and 17
continue to be part of the education system (as compared to 47%
boys). In India the proportion of girls and boys enrolling in primary
school is approximately the same. However, as they grow up there is a
decline in the rights of women as subjects of their own lives with many
being subjected to violence within the home, and more than half being
restricted to their homes with no independent financial earnings.
Gender Inequality
Girls and women have made major strides since 1990, but they have
not yet gained gender equity. The disadvantages facing women and
girls are a major source of inequality. All too often, women and girls are
discriminated against in health, education, political representation,
labour market, etc. with negative repercussions for development of
their capabilities and their freedom of choice.
