In English grammar we use "there is" to talk
about things we can see and things that
exist.
We use there is for singular and
uncountable nouns.
POSITIVE
SENTENTENCES

We usethere is to say that something exists or not right now.


THERE IS + NOUN +
COMPLEMENT.
Example:
There is a letter on your desk.

We use the contraction theres for more commonly only in informal


speaking:
Shes very determined and theres no chance she will change her mind.
NEGATIVE
SENTENTENCES
The negative is formed by putting not after is or are:
THERE IS + NOT + NOUN +
COMPLEMENT.
o Examples:
There is not a horse in the field.

Negative form using "any".


For uncountable nouns, use any after the negative isn't.
Example: "There isn't any money in my wallet."
INTERROGATIVE
SENTENCES

To form a question we place is in front of there.


We use there is/ there isnt in short answers.

IS THERE + NOUN + COMPLEMENT?


Examples:
Is there a dog in the supermarket? - No, there isn't.
