when he gathered the APOSTLES around him in the Upper Room in Jerusalem and celebrated the Last Supper with them. . “on the night when he was betrayed” (1 Cor 11:23).When did Christ institute the Eucharist? Christ instituted the Holy EUCHARIST on the evening before his death.

and so to entrust to his beloved Spouse. a memorial of his death and resurrection: a sacrament of love. our Savior instituted the Eucharistic sacrifice of his Body and Blood. and a pledge of future glory is given to us. the Church. a bond of charity. a sign of unity. on the night he was betrayed. the mind is filled with grace. a Paschal banquet 'in which Christ is consumed. which fulfills the Jewish Passover and anticipates the final Passover of the Church in the glory of the kingdom.CCC 1340 By celebrating the Last Supper with his apostles in the course of the Passover meal. Jesus' passing over to his father by his death and Resurrection. is anticipated in the Supper and celebrated in the Eucharist. the new Passover. Jesus gave the Jewish Passover its definitive meaning. .

POPE BENEDICT XVI.How can Jesus distribute his Body and his Blood? By making the bread into his Body and the wine into his Blood. he anticipates his death. August 21. 2005 . he accepts it in his heart. What on the outside is simply brutal violence—the Crucifixion —from within becomes an act of total self-giving love. and he transforms it into an action of love.

our Creator and Father.Why is the Mass is the Perfect Sacrifice under the New Law? What is Sacrifice?   Sacrifice is the offering to God. . Indeed. If Sacrifices are suppressed. under whose dominion we are with all that we posseses. because of this it is properly called a ‘divine thing’. no other reason for the existence of Sacrifice. In that resides the most important element of divine worship. Caritatis stadium. of a visible gift as a token of the offering of ourselves.   Pope Leo XIII. It consist in acknowledging and adoring God as supreme Lord of all. there is no other justification. no religion will subsist and even the idea of it cannot be conceived. The very essence and nature of religion implies the necessity of Sacrifice.

CCC 1367 The sacrifice of Christ and the sacrifice of the Eucharist are one single sacrifice: "The victim is one and the same: the same now offers through the ministry of priests. the same Christ who offered himself once in a bloody manner on the altar of the cross is contained and is offered in an unbloody manner. as the words of consecration itself show. once only. who offered Himself. whose Sacrifice is daily renewed in the Eucharist. The bloody and unbloody victim are not two. he changes the substance of the bread and wine into the true substance of His body and blood. for the ministers who offer Sacrifice. a bloody Sacrifice on the altar of the cross. acting in the Person of Christ the Lord. consecrate the holy mysteries. but.

In the Eucharistic sacrifice the whole of creation loved by God is presented to the Father through the death and the Resurrection of Christ. Ephesians 1:5-6 . Through Christ the Church can offer the sacrifice of praise in thanksgiving for all that God has made good. and just in creation and in humanity. Thanksgiving And Propitiation? CCC 1359 The Eucharist. Why is The Mass considered A Sacrifice Of Praise. the sacrament of our salvation accomplished by Christ on the cross. is also a sacrifice of praise in thanksgiving for the work of creation. beautiful.

CCC 1361 The Eucharist is also the sacrifice of praise by which the Church sings the glory of God in the name of all creation. to be accepted in him. This sacrifice of praise is possible only through Christ: he unites the faithful to his person. 15:28 . and to his intercession. so that the sacrifice of praise to the Father is offered through Christ and with him. to his praise. 1 Cor.

Answer: The word propitiation carries the basic idea of appeasement or satisfaction. specifically toward God. (Hebrew 2:17) Hebrew 2:17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect. . to make propitiation for the sins of the people. so 17  that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God. Propitiation is a two-part act that involves appeasing the wrath of an offended person and being reconciled to him. at para makapagbayad-sala siya para sa bayan.

Hence this usual prayer of the Church: As often as the commemoration of this victim is celebrated. and grace in time of need. so often is the work of our salvation being done. but also truly a propitiatory Sacrifice. for SO delighted is the Lord with the door of this victim that. without doubt. . therefore.The Mass A Sacrifice Of Praise. the sacred and holy Sacrifice of the Mass is not a Sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving only. bestowing on us the gift of grace and repentance. as the holy Council (of Trent) has also) explained. and affected with an inward sorrow for our transgressions.

.How does the mass profits the living and the dead? CCC 1414 As sacrifice. the Eucharist is also offered in reparation for the sins of the living and the dead and to obtain spiritual or temporal benefits from God.

but to all the faithful. but whose sins have not yet been fully expiated. it is not less available when offered for them. calamities and difficulties of every sort. that all Masses. according to the most authentic Apostolic tradition.The Mass Profits Both The Living And The Dead Pastors should next teach that such is the efficacy of this Sacrifice that its benefits extend not only to the celebrant and communicant. their punishments. as being conducive to the common interest and salvation of all the faithful. It is hence easy to perceive. whether living with us on earth. are to be considered common to all. For. than when offered for the sins of the living. satisfactions. or already numbered with those who are dead in the Lord. .

and the food that makes us live for ever in Jesus Christ. "the work of our redemption is carried on" and we "break the one bread that provides the medicine of immortality.CCC 1405 There is no surer pledge or dearer sign of this great hope in the new heavens and new earth "in which righteousness dwells. (2 Peter 3:13) than the Eucharist. . the antidote for death. Every time this mystery is celebrated.

the Church offers the Eucharistic sacrifice. .CCC 1370 To the offering of Christ are united not only the members still here on earth. In communion with and commemorating the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints. In the Eucharist the Church is as it were at the foot of the cross with Mary. but also those already in the glory of heaven. united with the offering and intercession of Christ.

By offering to God our supplications for those who have fallen asleep. . if they have sinned. . and so render favorable. so that they may be able to enter into the light and peace of Christ: Put this body anywhere! Don't trouble yourselves about it! I simply ask you to remember me at the Lord's altar wherever you are. we pray [in the anaphora] for the holy fathers and bishops who have fallen asleep. the God who loves man. offer Christ sacrificed for the sins of all. and in general for all who have fallen asleep before us. in the belief that it is a great benefit to the souls on whose behalf the supplication is offered. while the holy and tremendous Victim is present. for them and for us. we .CCC 1371 The Eucharistic sacrifice is also offered for the faithful departed who "have died in Christ but are not yet wholly purified... Who can preside in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass? CCC 1411 Only validly ordained priests can preside at the Eucharist and consecrate the bread and the wine so that they become the Body and Blood of the Lord. .
