“TODAY SALVATION HAS

COME TO THIS HOUSE
BECAUSE THIS MAN TOO IS
A DESCENDANT OF
ABRAHAM. FOR THE SON
OF MAN HAS COME TO
SEEK AND TO SAVE WHAT
WAS LOST.”
Luke 19: 9 –
ZACCHAEUS WAS NOT JUST
A LITTLE MAN, HE WAS A
MAN IDOLIZING MONEY
AND POWER AND TAKING
ADVANTAGE OF HIS
NEIGHBORS. BUT WHEN
JESUS CALLS OUT TO
ZACCHAEUS, HIS LIFE IS
CHANGED FOREVER.
ZACCHAEUS IMMEDIATELY
REPENTS AND OFFERS
RESTITUTION TO ANYONE
HE’S WRONGED.
THIS STORY IS FOUND
ONLY IN LUKE. HE IS A
TAX COLLECTOR. JUST
LIKE THE ONE WHO
STANDS BEFORE THE
ALTAR OF GOD
BEATING HIS BREAST
AND SAYING
“HAVE MERCY ON ME
LORD, A SINNER!” ONE
PERSON WHO RESPONDS
GENEROUSLY TO GOD’S
CALL.
LIKE ZACCHAEUS, WE FIND
OTHER REFERENCES IN THE
GOSPEL ABOUT TAX
COLLECTORS, DECLARED TO
BE UNCLEAN AND SINNER
WHO ARE RESPONDING TO
GOD’S INVITATION TO
REPENTANCE.
VERSE 2: “…FOR HE
WAS SHORT IN
STATURE:
THIS MAY NOT BE
REFERRING ONLY
ABOUT HIS PHYSICAL
HEIGHT BUT BEFORE
THE EYES OF THE
PEOPLE HE IS JUST
SMALL, OR EVEN
NOTHING FOR THEY
WERE REVILED BY THE
JEWS BECAUSE OF
THEIR PERCEIVED
GREED FOR MONEY
AND COLLABORATION
WITH THE ROMAN
OCCUPIERS.
VERSE 5: “… WHEN HE
REACHED THE PLACE,
JESUS LOOKED UP
AND SAID TO HIM,
“ZACCHAEUS, COME
DOWN QUICKLY, FOR
TODAY I MUST STAY AT
YOUR HOUSE.”
IT SHOULD NOT ESCAPE US
THAT THE LOOK THAT WAS
THROWN BY JESUS WHO
WAS STANDING ON THE
GROUND WHILE LOOKING
UP TO ZACCHAEUS UP THE
SYCAMORE TREE WAS A
GAZE FILLED WITH SO
MUCH LOVE AND MERCY.
THE OFTEN RIDICULED
MAN, SHORT AND
NOTHING BEFORE THE
EYES OF MANY IS NOW
GIVEN SO MUCH
“ATTENTION” BY A
FORGIVING AND NON
JUDGEMENTAL SON OF
THE FORGIVING FATHER.
VERSE 7: “… WHEN
THEY ALL SAW THIS,
THEY BEGAN TO
GRUMBLE, SAYING,
“HE HAS GONE TO
STAY AT THE HOUSE
OF A SINNER.”
“… for the Son of
Man has come to
seek and to save
what was lost.”
LUKE 19:10
VERSE 8: “…
ZACCHAEUS STOOD
THERE AND SAID TO
THE LORD, “BEHOLD,
HALF OF MY
POSSESSIONS, LORD, I
SHALL GIVE TO
THE POOR, AND IF I
HAVE EXTORTED
ANYTHING FROM
ANYONE I SHALL
REPAY IT FOUR
TIMES OVER.”
RESTITUTION
THE RESTORATION
OF SOMETHING
LOST OR STOLEN TO
ITS PROPER OWNER.
Lesson
IN THE FIGURE OF
ZACCHAEUS, WE HAVE
A PORTRAIT OF A
LOST SOUL. A RICH
MAN WHO HAS
APPARENTLY GAINED
HIS LIVING BY FRAUD.
BUT HIS FAITH &
HUMILITY BRING
SALVATION TO HIS
HOUSE. HE
EXPRESSES HIS FAITH
IN HIS FERVENT
DESIRE TO “SEE”
JESUS.
ZACCHAEUS RECEIVES
HIM WITH JOY. THE
LOVING GAZE OF
CHRIST CHANGED HIM.
THE HEART OF
ZACCHAEUS WARMS
TO LOVE OF
NEIGHBOUR.
FROM A FEELING OF
ISOLATION, WHICH HAD
LED HIM TO ENRICH
HIMSELF WITHOUT
CARING ABOUT WHAT
OTHERS HAD TO
SUFFER, HE MOVES TO
AN ATTITUDE OF
SHARING.
"ZACCHAEUS GAVE
AWAY HIS WEALTH
AND IMMEDIATELY
REPLACED IT WITH
THE WEALTH OF THE
KINGDOM OF HEAVEN"
HOMILY ST. JEROME.
