CONSEQUENCES FOR

JERUSALEM FOR NOT
HEEDING GOD’S PROPHET
NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE
NEW GENRE

THIS IS ANOTHER KIND OF
LITERARY GENRE, AN
ESCHATOLOGICAL
DISCOURSE. REMEMBER
THAT THE GOSPEL OF JOHN
AND THE BOOK OF
REVELATION
WERE WRITTEN 20 OR 30 YEARS
AFTER THE DESTRUCTION OF THE
TEMPLE OF JERUSALEM. THIS HAS
INFLUENCED THEIR CONCEPT OF
DESTRUCTION OF THE TEMPLE
WHERE YAHWEH RESIDES AND
THEIR CONCEPT OF HIS SHEKINAH
(PRESENCE). THUS, THEIR
EXPERIENCE COLOR THEIR
NARRATIVE AND HISTORY.
ESCHATOLOGY IS A MAJOR
BRANCH OF STUDY WITHIN
CHRISTIAN THEOLOGY.
ESCHATOLOGY, FROM TWO
GREEK WORDS MEANING
"LAST" (ἔΣΧΑΤΟΣ) AND
"STUDY" (-λογία), IS THE
STUDY OF 'END THINGS' OR
THE ‘THE LAST THINGS”.
THIS CONCERNS
WHETHER THE END OF
AN INDIVIDUAL LIFE,
THE END OF THE AGE,
THE END OF THE WORLD
AND THE NATURE OF
THE KINGDOM OF GOD.
THINGS LIKE THIS IS
ALSO RELATED TO
APOCALYPTIC
LITERATURE, IT TALKS
ABOUT THE COMPLETE
FINAL DESTRUCTION OF
THE WORLD, ESPECIALLY
AS DESCRIBED IN
THE BIBLICAL BOOK OF
REVELATION. THAT
TALKS OF,
RELATING TO, OR
INVOLVING TERRIBLE
VIOLENCE AND
DESTRUCTION OF, OR
RELATING TO THE END
OF THE WORLD.
PESTILENCE, WAR,
FAMINE AND DEATH
THERE ARE TWO WINDOWS TO
SEE IN THIS PERICOPE

LOOK BACK ON 19:47 – 21: 4
AND SEE THE CONSEQUENCES
OF THE RELIGIOUS LEADERS’
REJECTION OF JESUS AND HIS
TEACHING IN THE TEMPLE.
THROUGH THE OTHER
WINDOW, THE READER LOOKS
BEYOND THE PASSION
NARRATIVE IN LUKE CHAPTERS
22 -23, AND SEE GOD’S
VINDICATION OF THE REJECTED
SON OF MAN AND JESUS’
STRENGTHENING OF HIS
DISCIPLES, WHO WILL BE
REJECTED BECAUSE OF THEIR
ALLEGIANCE TO HIM.

AN IMPORTANT
CHRISTOLOGICAL POINT IS: HIS
COMING AS THE SON OF MAN,
WILL BRING TO ALL WHO DWELL
UPON THE ENTIRE FACE OF THE
EARTH THE MESSAGE OF
CHOOSING/DECIDING FOR HIS
VALUES/PRINCIPLES.
THE SIEGE OF JERUSALEM
IN 70 A.D.
GESSIUS FLORUS, THE
ROMAN PROCURATOR
DURING THIS TIME, LOVED
MONEY AND HATED JEWS.
AS HE RULED JUDEA, HE
CARED LITTLE FOR THEIR
RELIGIOUS SENSIBILITIES.
WHEN TAX REVENUES
WERE LOW,
HE SEIZED SILVER FROM THE
TEMPLE. AS THE UPROAR
AGAINST HIM GREW, IN A.D.
66, HE SENT TROOPS INTO
JERUSALEM WHO MASSACRED
3,600 CITIZENS. FLORUS’S
ACTION TOUCHED OFF AN
EXPLOSIVE REBELLION THAT
HAD BEEN SIZZLING FOR SOME
TIME.
IN JERUSALEM, THE TEMPLE
CAPTAIN SIGNIFIED
SOLIDARITY WITH THE REVOLT
BY STOPPING THE DAILY
SACRIFICES TO CAESAR. SOON
ALL JERUSALEM WAS IN AN
UPROAR, EXPELLING OR
KILLING THE ROMAN TROOPS.
THEN ALL JUDEA WAS IN
REVOLT.
THE JEWISH REVOLT BEGAN—
AND MET ITS BITTER END—AT
MASADA, A HUNK OF ROCK
OVERLOOKING THE DEAD SEA.
CESTIUS CALLUS, THE ROMAN
GOVERNOR OF THE REGION,
MARCHED FROM SYRIA WITH
TWENTY THOUSAND SOLDIERS.
HE BESIEGED JERUSALEM FOR
SIX MONTHS, YET FAILED. HE
LEFT SIX THOUSAND DEAD
ROMAN SOLDIERS, NOT TO
MENTION WEAPONRY THAT THE
JEWISH DEFENDERS PICKED UP
AND USED.
EMPEROR NERO THEN SENT
VESPASIAN, A DECORATED
GENERAL, TO QUELL THE
JUDEAN REBELLION.
VESPASIAN PUT DOWN THE
OPPOSITION IN GALILEE, THEN
IN TRANSJORDAN,
THEN IN IDUMEA. HE CIRCLED IN
ON JERUSALEM. BUT BEFORE THE
DEFEAT, NERO DIED. VESPASIAN
BECAME AN EMPEROR AFTER HIS
DEATH. ONE OF HIS FIRST
IMPERIAL ACTS WAS TO APPOINT
HIS SON TITUS TO CONDUCT THE
JEWISH WAR.
BY NOW, JERUSALEM WAS
ISOLATED FROM THE REST OF
THE NATION, AS THE SIEGE
WORE ON, PEOPLE BEGAN
DYING FROM STARVATION AND
PLAGUE. MEANWHILE THE
ROMANS EMPLOYED NEW WAR
MACHINES TO HURL BOULDERS
AGAINST THE CITY WALLS.
BATTERING RAMS ASSAULTED
THE FORTIFICATIONS. JEWISH
DEFENDERS FOUGHT ALL DAY
AND STRUGGLED TO REBUILD
THE WALLS AT NIGHT.
EVENTUALLY THE ROMANS
BROKE THROUGH THE OUTER
WALL, THEN THE SECOND
WALL, AND FINALLY THE THIRD
WALL. STILL THE JEWS
FOUGHT, SCURRYING TO THE
TEMPLE AS THEIR LAST LINE
OF DEFENSE. THAT WAS THE
END FOR THE VALIANT JEWISH
DEFENDERS AND FOR THE
TEMPLE.
THE ZEALOT BAND THAT TOOK
MASADA HELD IT FOR AT
LEAST THREE MORE YEARS.
WHEN THE ROMANS FINALLY
BUILT THEIR SIEGE RAMP AND
INVADED THE MOUNTAIN
FORTRESS, THEY FOUND THE
DEFENDERS DEAD—THEY HAD
COMMITTED SUICIDE TO AVOID
BEING CAPTURED BY
FOREIGNERS.
THIS IS THE RECREATED
MODEL OF HOW THE TEMPLE
LOOKED LIKE BEFORE ITS
DESTRUCTION.
THIS IS HOW IT LOOKS TODAY.
WITH THE MOSQUE ON TOP, UGLY
PATH WAY THAT OPENS FROM THE
WESTERN PART OF THE WALL
WHERE ONLY JEWISH MEN ARE
ALLOWED TO PRAY AT THE WAILING
WALL.
Lesson
VERSE 19: “… BY YOUR
PERSEVERANCE YOU WILL SECURE
YOUR LIVES”.

JESUS EXHORTS HIS DISCIPLES TO
PERSEVERE AMID DURESS. IF
FACED WITH PERSECUTION AND/OR
DEATH, HOW CAN WE ENDURE? IT
WILL ALSO HELP TO REMEMBER
THIS PROMISE—THAT BY OUR
ENDURANCE WE WILL GAIN OUR
SOULS.
SIX CENTURIES EARLIER,
GOD CALLED JEREMIAH
TO WARN THE PEOPLE
OF JERUSALEM TO
CHANGE THEIR WAYS SO
THAT GOD WOULD
CONTINUE TO DWELL
WITH THEM. JEREMIAH
WAS TO
PROCLAIM, “DON’T TRUST IN
LYING WORDS, SAYING, THE
TEMPLE OF YAHWEH, THE
TEMPLE OF YAHWEH, THE
TEMPLE OF YAHWEH.”
(JEREMIAH 7:4). GOD ASKED,
“IS THIS HOUSE, WHICH IS
CALLED BY MY NAME, BECOME
A DEN OF ROBBERS IN YOUR
EYES?” (JEREMIAH 7:11)
THE PEOPLE FAILED TO
HEED JEREMIAH’S
WARNING, AND THE CITY
AND TEMPLE WERE
DESTROYED AND THE
PEOPLE TAKEN INTO
CAPTIVITY.
OUR FAITH IN JESUS, NOT
THE IDEA THAT ONLY IN
THE TEMPLE OF
JERUSALEM, YAHWEH
RESIDES WILL KEEP US. IF
WE FAIL TO REACH OUT
WITH THE GOSPEL—FAILED
TO LOVE OUR NEIGHBORS
AND TO SERVE OUR
COMMUNITY,
EVEN OUR MOST
MAGNIFICENT HOUSES
OF WORSHIP —EVEN
THOSE THAT SEEM MOST
ENDURING AMOUNTS TO
NOTHING UNLESS
PEOPLE FAITHFULLY DO
GOD’S WILL.
