THE WORKS OF THE

MESSIAH:
THIS REFERS TO THE
DEEDS FOUND IN MT 8–9.
MATHEW 8:1–9:38 THIS IS A
NARRATIVE SECTION OF
THE SECOND BOOK OF THE
GOSPEL IS COMPOSED OF
NINE MIRACLE STORIES.
EACH SPEAKS OF JESUS’
TEACHING, PREACHING,
AND HEALING. SOME
SCHOLARS SPEAK OF A
PORTRAYAL OF JESUS AS
“MESSIAH OF THE
WORD” IN MT 5–7 AND
“MESSIAH OF THE
DEED” IN MT 8–9.
JESUS SAID TO THEM IN
REPLY, “GO AND TELL JOHN
WHAT YOU HEAR AND SEE:
THE BLIND REGAIN THEIR
SIGHT, THE LAME WALK,
LEPERS ARE CLEANSED, THE
DEAF HEAR, THE DEAD ARE
RAISED, AND THE POOR
HAVE THE GOOD NEWS
PROCLAIMED TO THEM.
MT11:5–6 JESUS’ RESPONSE
IS TAKEN FROM PASSAGES
OF ISAIAH (Is 26:19; 29:18–
19; 35:5–6;61:1) ASSERTING
THAT THE MESSIANIC TIME,
THE APPEARANCE OF THE
SAVIOR IS NOW
PRONOUNCED BECAUSE OF
THE DEEDS/ACTIONS
ACCOMPANYING IT.
ISAIAH 26:19
BUT YOUR DEAD SHALL LIVE,
THEIR CORPSES SHALL RISE!
AWAKE AND SING, YOU WHO
LIE IN THE DUST!
ISAIAH 29:18-19
ON THAT DAY THE DEAF
SHALL HEAR THE WORDS
OF A SCROLL; AND OUT OF
GLOOM AND DARKNESS,
THE EYES OF THE BLIND
THE LOWLY SHALL AGAIN
FIND JOY IN THE LORD,
THE POOREST REJOICE IN
THE HOLY ONE OF ISRAEL.
ISAIAH 35:5-6
THEN THE EYES OF THE BLIND
SHALL SEE, AND THE EARS OF
THE DEAF BE OPENED; THEN
THE LAME SHALL LEAP LIKE A
STAG, AND THE MUTE TONGUE
SING FOR JOY.
ISAIAH 61:1
THE ANOINTED BEARER OF
GLAD TIDINGS THE SPIRIT OF
THE LORD GOD IS UPON ME,
BECAUSE THE LORD HAS
ANOINTED ME;
HE HAS SENT ME TO BRING GOOD
NEWS TO THE AFFLICTED, TO BIND
UP THE BROKENHEARTED, TO
PROCLAIM LIBERTY TO THE
CAPTIVES, RELEASE TO THE
PRISONERS,
“WHAT DID YOU GO OUT
TO THE DESERT TO SEE?
A REED SWAYED BY THE
WIND?
THEN WHAT
DID YOU GO
OUT TO
SEE?
SOMEONE
DRESSED IN
FINE
CLOTHING?
‘BEHOLD, I AM SENDING MY
MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU;
HE WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY
BEFORE YOU.’
JOHN THE BAPTIST EVEN
WHEN HE WOULD DIE A
VIOLENT DEATH BEFITTING
A MARTYR, HE WAS
FAITHFUL TO HIS MISSION,
BEING THE VOICE IN THE
WILDERNESS PREPARING
FOR THE WAY OF THE LORD
UNTIL THE VERY END.
Lesson
THERE HAD BEEN NO
PROPHET IN ISRAEL SINCE
THE LAST OF THE OLD
TESTAMENT PROPHETS,
MALACHI. EVERY ONE OF US
WAS BORN INTO THIS WORLD
FOR A SPECIAL PURPOSE,
AND TODAY’S CELEBRATION
CALLS US TO DISCOVER
WHAT IS OUR PURPOSE.
THE COMING OF JOHN
WAS EAGERLY AWAITED,
YET HE WAS MORE THAN
A PROPHET, FOR HE WAS
THE PRECURSOR OF THE
ONE WHO WOULD BRING
SALVATION IN THE NEW
AND FINAL AGE.
