Company History
Facebook is a social networking website which was founded in 2004 by
Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg and two of his roommates
Facebook was originally developed for Harvard students, then expanded to
other colleges, high schools, workplaces and soon after it began allowing
everyone to sign up

FACEBOOK FEATURES
News Feed: News feed displays the recent activities of users friends
reorganized and summarized on a daily basis. It uses an algorithm called
EdgeRank that selects a small subset of items to place in a users News
feed using signals based on user behavior throughout the site.
Timeline: It organized the users posts, content and activities
chronologically over the span of a lifetime.
Privacy Concerns: Users could limit the visibility of their status updates
and personal photographs to individual people or specific groups
Facebook Ads:
Display Ads Advertisers target campaigns on the basis of gender, age,
geographic location, marital status, languages spoken, places of education,
workplaces and interests as stated on a users Facebook profile. These ads
involved advertising per click and per thousand ad impressions and generated
low levels of engagement with the user.
Social Ads This form of advertising leveraged users social relationships. This
allowed companies that had a Facebook page to target friends of fans of that
page.
Sponsored stories and Ads for Applications Turned user interactions into
advertisements
Facebook Pages
Corporate Pages Businesses can create free custom Facebook pages and
attract users to like them. Users will then see status updates, pictures and
videos posted by the firm on their page.
Promoted Posts - Brand page owners pay to push the content to a broader
audience.
Mobile Mobile ads were designed to appear naturally within a users
newsfeed. Three types of units: Mobile sponsored stories, Mobile page post
ads, mobile app installed ads
Targeting:
Facebook Exchange A real time bidding platform designed to show Facebook
ads based on users online browsing history
Custom Audience Targeting Advertisers could upload their own contact list
of customers to Facebook and match up information with Facebooks data to
find their customer base. Businesses can segregate ads and promotions for
existing and new prospects.
Facebook partnered with online and offline data companies to allow businesses
to upload customer contact lists from third parties.
Facebook Platform:
Enabled third party developers to develop applications on top of Facebook
Ability to post to users profile directly after permission from user
New Industries such as social gaming were built entirely on Facebook platform
which built greater user engagement and growth in the sites traffic
Facebook credits, a virtual currency, was introduced that could be exchanged
for virtual goods in applications across Facebook but was scrapped later
Facebook became mobile games publisher and provided visibility to small and
medium sized games developers
Facebook for Websites and Applications :
Users can use their Facebook Account credentials to register at other
websites thus saving time as the third party websites pulled out their
personal data from their Facebook profile to establish the account
Users can interact with their Facebook friends in the context of the
third-party website
A third party website could send information on a users activities on the
website to Facebook for their friends to see
Open Graph :
Open stream API activity allowed developers to incorporate Facebooks
activity stream of users updates, photos, links and comments inside
third party applications and websites
User experiences can be automatically shared with friends when the user
engages with a website or application in a meaningful way
Adoption of mobile apps using Facebook Open Graphs by facilitating
visibility of user engagement with the app on Facebook to users friends
Facebook Graph Search :
Search engine that allows users to discover people, photos,
places and interests on Facebook with greater ease
Can be used to find recommended products and services,
identify local businesses and recruit new employees
Graph Search indexed solely Facebooks social graph and
worked best with more precise requests
It used Bing, Microsofts search engine, to deliver search
results from the web when unable to find the results
This product did not include advertisements
The company may incorporate paid search results and local
advertising listings in future
Open future prospects for growth in mobile space by providing
local search information on mobiles
