SOLAR ENERGY
Solar energy is here to stay.
The biggest advantage of solar energy is its abundant availability and the
fact that it doesnt require any fuel for operation.
This energy can be made use of in two ways the Thermal route i.e. using
heat for drying, heating, cooking or generation of electricity or through the
Photovoltaic route which converts solar energy in to electricity that can be
used for a myriad purposes such as lighting, pumping and generation of
electricity.
With its pollution free nature, virtually inexhaustible supply and global
distribution- solar energy is very attractive energy resource.

RENEWABLE ENERGY IN THE WORLD: PRODUCTION

Renewables accounted 27.7% of

global power generation capacity and
22.8% of global electricity demand.

Renewables made up for 59% of net

additions to global power capacity.

Total RE power capacity: 1712 GW,

an increase of more than 8.5% over
2013.

Energy generated through Solar Sources is still ONLY ~1.3% 6

RENEWABLE ENERGY IN THE WORLD: CONSUMPTION

Renewable energy provided

an estimated 19.1% of
global final energy
consumption in 2013.

The share of modern

renewable energy increased
to 10.1%.

The share of traditional

biomass was of 9%, same
as in 2012.

Energy consumed through Solar Sources is higher at ~5.4% compared to its generation at 1.3%

Power Sector total renewable energy power capacity installed

BRICS lead for total RE power capacity (incl. hydro): 38% of global capacity.
EU leads for non-hydro RE power capacity: 42% of global capacity 8

Solar Photovoltaics (PV) total global capacity

Solar PV:
+40 GW added
Total capacity: 177 GW

More than 60% of all PV capacity in

operation worldwide at the end of 2014
was added over the past three years.

Asia eclipsed all other markets, accounting

for almost 60% of global additions.

A growth from 3.7GW to 177 GW in 10

years i.e. an average of 468.8% increase in
capacity per year. 9

Solar Photovoltaics (PV) top countries

China accounted for a third of

global capacity additions,
followed by Japan & the U.S

Five countries added more than

1 GW of solar PV to their grids
in 2014, down from nine
countries in 2013.

India has added only 0.7GW of

Solar PV capacity in past 10
years.

Jobs in Renewable Energy

Global employment continued to

increase

An estimated 7.7 million direct or

indirect jobs in the renewable
energy industry

Global wind power employment

crossed the 1 million jobs threshold
in 2014

3.3 million direct or indirect jobs

in the Solar Energy industry

INDIAS UNIQUE POSITION
Economic Value: The generation of solar electricity coincides with the normal
peak demand during daylight hours in most places, thus mitigating peak energy
costs, brings total energy bills down, and obviates the need to build as much
additional generation and transmission capacity as would be the case without
PV.

Geographical Location: India being a tropical country receives adequate solar

radiation for 300 days, amounting to 3,000 hours of sunshine equivalent to over
5,000 trillion kWh.

Almost all the regions receive 4-7 kWh of solar radiation per sqm with about
2,3003,200 sunshine hours/year, depending upon the location.

India Solar Resource

India receives year round Solar

radiation to different intensity
at different geographical
locations.

Punjab receives about 280-300

days of sunlight.

The average direct normal

irradiance of Punjab region is
4.0 to 5.0 KWh/m2 per day.

SOLAR: THE NEXT LOGICAL STEP

Solar energy is more flexible and versatile than other forms of renewables such as wind or hydro.

Where wind and hydro are available, they are good sources of energy, but only select places get good wind,
and hydro can have many impacts.

The Sun provides about 100 000 TW to the Earth, which is approximately 10 000 times greater than the
world's present rate of energy consumption (13 TW).

Photovoltaic (PV) cells are being used increasingly to tap into this huge resource and will play key role in
future sustainable energy systems.

Our present needs could be met by covering 0.1% of the Earth's surface with PV installations that achieve a
conversion efficiency of 10%.
