Why Amtrak?
The National Railroad Passenger
Corporation, known as Amtrak, was
created by the Rail Passenger
Service Act of 1970 in order to
relieve freight railroads of the
federally-mandated requirement to
operate passenger service.

As part of the agreement, freight

railroads are required to allow
reasonable access at a reasonable
price to trains operated by Amtrak.
