Question five: How did

you attract/address
your audience?
How does the narrative engage
the audience?
Enigma City
Confusion is one of the prime elements used to create a layered atmosphere. As seen in the setting/urban
opening, there are no hints regarding what the investigator, nor the anonymous caller looks
like, but the audience have knowledge that theyre present. This would hook the audience into
background
watching more, due to the reasons that they dont know who is behind these personas. What convention of
could each character stand for; this atmosphere raises questions linking to the true identity of
the characters particularly the anonymous caller. Could the they be leading the investigator

in the right direction? Does that make them an protagonist? Could the investigator be falling
into a trap? These are questions that audiences could ask regarding the initial acquisition of
misperception in the opening of the film.
Disequilibrium
When watching Film Noirs during the research period for this project, I identified a sort of
sequence threaded through the storyline depicting the trend of what would usually happen in
a typical Film Noir; pessimistic beginning, ray of hope whether it be though potential success
or love found from characters, ray of hope is weakened and eventually disappears with
pessimism. It is clear disequilibrium plays a role in Anonymous Lead because of the initial

bleak outlook of the plot. This sequence could help the audience understand what events of figure in this shot
the opening would determine the ultimate trend; that when optimism reaches its peak in the
film, it is always inevitably struck down with cynicism. This imbalance in storyline challenges

the fact that the callers
face is practically
hidden and unreadable.
How does your opening entice
your audience to keep
watching?
Ambiguity

Initially, the audience will not understand the reason

why the antagonist couple are on the run (the plot
synopsis post should help the link between this
opening against the whole film), so confusion will
dominate the atmosphere; the audience are have
limited knowledge of who this couple are and what
they look like as well as the anonymous caller.
Are there aspects of mise-en-scene your potential
audience will identify/empathise/recognise/engage
with?
In terms of mise-en-scene, there is very little regarding what audiences can
relate with and what it can symbolise. Location is not an easy giveaway in the
opening; meaning that the audience may not be able to identify with the
surroundings the characters are situated in (as seen in the suitcase
sequence). Also, due to the setting and time period of the film, the audience
may not be able to connect with the general plot, in a sense of what people
had in the time this film is set in compared to present times. The audience
may be able to identify with iconographical elements of Film Noir, in this case
the red telephone

this telephone
something that our potential audience would
perhaps engage with for the reason that they
make use of modern technology rather than
technology from the past, therefore la cking a
connection between the mise-en-scene and
the audience.
How is the audience positioned?
Is intertextuality involved?
Film Noirs typically narrate a story based around
dystopian thinking and pessimism ultimately meaning
that any protagonist e.g. Investigator/Detective figure
will not win against evil, as Film Noir storylines obtain
a sort of negativity which prevents any optimistic
efforts from ever being resolved. We wanted to
include this tactic within our opening so it could
relate with the other films, in the sense that the
audience could figure out the perspective in which
they are positioned.
Throughout the majority of the opening, there is a
heavy emphasis on the initial antagonists the
anonymous caller and the couple in a sense of how
this is following their side of the story predominantly;
the audience are positioned in a way where they
always see through evil eyes. The fact that there is
emphasis on the more malicious aspects also implies
that the audience are not supposed to see much
success; much accomplishment; much optimism from
the protagonists side

Like most if not all Film Noirs, these are

examples of where story endings are
dominated by evil and pessimism.
