Nation
The nation is the concept denoting a common ethnic and
cultural identity shared by a single people.

State
The state is the political unit defined in terms of territory,
population, organized government, exercising effective
control over its territory.

Nation state
The term nation state has been used by social scientists
to denote the gradual fusion of cultural and political
boundaries after a long control of political authority by a
central government. Thus a nation-state is a nation that
possesses political sovereignty. It is socially cohesive as well
as politically organized and independent.
Origin of nation state system
The origin of nation state system can be traced back to
the signing of the treaty of Westphalia in 1648. even before
it the state existed and they entered into relation with each
others but they were not sovereign states as their authority
was restrained by the roman church and the roman empire.
it means that the treaty of Westphalia recognized the
sovereign nature of the state and henceforth the supreme
authority shall be recognized with the state. State shell be
free from internal and external control.

Resultantly such countries, as England, France, and Spain
shook off the authority of the pope and became a nation-state.
In the course of time nation state underwent further
development and changes on account of the rise of
representative government, industrial revolution, change in
population, growth of international law, development of
diplomacy, growing interdependence of state economic
sphere, and the expansion of the nation state system to non
western world.
Now there are more then 187 nation-state all over the world.
