Our Purpose:
Our goal is to provide information about the special education services here at OMS
to help support all students.

These are programs that service students from across the whole district.

SUN Center Students
-3 Middle School teachers and 11 students.

- SUN Middle School follows OMS times & A, B day

-We are staffed one-to-one in our classroom to support behavioral and


academic needs of our students.

-We have several students who currently attend mainstream classes

-Our students have a range of needs; some with high behaviors, low
cognitive abilities, high sensory needs and they lack social awareness.

-Students may have individualized schedules (for inclusion)

-Students will come with paraprofessional support to mainstream


classes
Setting I, II, III What???
Federal Settings:

By definition, a special education setting is: The FEDERAL


INSTRUCTIONAL SETTING is the location and the amount of time that
the student with an IEP/IFSP/IIIP receives special education services.

Setting I
Regular Class - less than 21% in special education classroom/setting

Setting II
Resource or Self-Contained - 21-60% in special education classroom/setting

Setting III *Highest needs

Separate Class - more than 60% in special education classroom/setting


Accommodations
Are changes in how a student accesses information and demonstrates
learning.

DOES NOT alter grades/diploma

Levels the playing field; provides EQUITY

Does not lower the standard

Examples:

breaks, extended time, small groups, different test or response


format, charts/checklists, preferential seating, noise/distraction
reduced area
Modifications
Are changes in what a student is expected to learn.

DOES alter grades/diploma

Changes the playing field

Actually lowers the standard/rigor**

Examples:

curriculum replacement, different grading system, MTAS vs. MCA, test


and class exemptions, more restrictive procedures, different
classroom environment (special ed room), only doing certain
portions of assignments
Disability Areas & Acronyms
There are 13 disability areas; these are some of the common ones you
will hear/see at OMS.

Emotional Behavioral Disorder - EBD


inability to learn that cannot be explained by intellectual, sensory, or health factors OR an inability to build or maintain satisfactory
interpersonal relationships with peers and teachers OR Inappropriate types of behavior or feelings under normal circumstances
OR A general pervasive mood of unhappiness or depression OR A tendency to develop physical symptoms or fears associated
with personal or school problems.

Specific Learning Disability - SLD


a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written,
that may manifest itself in the imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or to do mathematical calculations

Autism Spectrum Disorder - ASD


a developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction, generally evident
before age three, that adversely affects a child's educational performance

Speech and Language-S/L
a communication disorder, such as stuttering, impaired articulation, a language impairment, or a voice impairment, that adversely
affects a child's educational performance.

Other Health Disabilities - OHD


having limited strength, vitality, or alertness, including a heightened alertness to environmental stimuli, that results in limited
alertness with respect to the educational environment.

Traumatic Brain Injury - TBI


an acquired injury to the brain caused by an external physical force, resulting in total or partial functional disability or psychosocial
impairment, or both, that adversely affects a child's educational performance.

Developmental Cognitive Disability - DCD


Also known as Intellectual Disability - ID

significantly subaverage general intellectual functioning, existing concurrently [at the same time] with deficits in adaptive behavior and

Evaluation Report (ER): A required document recording data from a
variety of assessments to determine eligibility

Individualized Education Plan (IEP): a legally binding document


developed by a team annually to list student goals and how they
will achieve them for the school year.
Accommodations/Modifications Page: Lists the accommodations and/or modifications
we all must provide to/for the student

Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP): A plan developed by the team defining a target
behavior, its triggers and how to respond to that behavior (not all students in
special education may have one)

Prior Written Notice (PWN): Signature page/contract that describes the


services/changes a student is getting
Evaluation Process
Students have to pass their vision/hearing and screening.

Develop an evaluation plan and parents have to sign to give permission.

30 school days to complete the evaluation.

Once evaluation is complete, then there are 10 school days to write the
IEP AND 14 calendar days for the parents to respond and sign.

After that services can start.

** Timelines for re-evaluations are very similar


Dissemination of Accommodations/BIP
This information is confidential; please only look at students who are in
your class.

and Modifications and Behavior Intervention Plan. This folder will
be listed alpha order by students last name, first initial, and
updated after IEP meeting.
