2. Handles and Blades 
Blades #10, 11, 12, 15 fit the #3 handle. Blades #22, #23 fit the #4 handle and are commonly used for large animals. 

The scalpel is held with thumb, middle and ring finger while the index finger is placed on the upper edge to help guide the scalpel. Long gentle cutting strokes are less traumatic to tissue than short chopping motions.

The scalpel should never be used in a "stabbing" motion

METZENBAUM SCISSOR 

This scissors are more delicate than Mayo scissors, it is used to cut delicate tissues and have a longer handle

HOW TO HOLD SCISSOR 

The thumb and ring finger are inserted into the rings of the scissors while the index and middle finger are used to guide the instrument.The instrument should remain at the tips of the fingers for maximum control.

This is the wrong way to hold the scissors. The ring finger should be inserted into the ring. This is also the wrong way to hold the scissors. The tips of the scissors should be pointing upwards

There are three kinds of absorbable suture:
Dexon: This is a synthetic material which takes 3 or 4 weeks to dissolve and is therefore can be uncomfortable for the woman. However, it is easy to use and does not tangle like catgut. Catgut (plain): This is a natural material that takes 4 or 5 days to dissolve and is therefore no in place long enough for the healing of a vaginal repair. Chromic Catgut: This is a catgut that has been treated with chromic acid to keep it from rapidly dissolving. It is ideal for the repair of vaginal tears. It takes about 10 days to partially dissolve and by 20 days dissolution is complete. Catgut tends to kink and tangle if

ADSON FORCEP 

Small serrated teeth on edge of tips. The Adsons tissue forceps has delicate serrated tips designed for light, careful handling of tissue.

ALLIS FORCEP 

Interdigitating short teeth to grasp and hold bowel or tissue. Slightly traumatic, use to hold intestine, fascia and skin.LOCKING FORCEP

BABCOCK FORCEP 

More delicate than Allis, less directly traumatic. Broad, flared ends with smooth tips. Used to atraumatically hold viscera (bowel and bladder).

SPONGE FORCEP 

Sponge forceps can be straight or curved. Sponge forceps can have smooth or serrated jaws. Used to atraumatically hold viscera (bowel and bladder).

TOWEL FORCEP  

USED TO CLAMP TOWELS AND LINENS USED ALSO TO SECURE CAUTERY WIRE AND SUCTION TUBES

NEEDLE HOLDER:
Hinged (locking) instrument used to hold the needle while suturing tissue. Good quality is ensured with tungsten carbide inserts at the tip of the needle holder.
