All eight planets orbit around the

Sun to make up the Solar System.
The Sun is by far the largest
object in the solar system. It is
over one million times bigger Did you know the Sun is a

o Mercury is the planet closest to the

Sun. It is still 36 million miles away!
o Mercury orbits around the Sun quickly,
it only takes 88 days!
o Mercury is the smallest planet.
o A day on planet Mercury lasts 176 days

Venus
Next

Venus is the second planet from the sun, and

the second brightest object in the night sky
after the moon.
The surface temperature on Venus can reach
471 C. Its the hottest planet in the solar
system
When Venus is west of the Sun, she rises
before the Sun in the morning and is known as
the Morning Star. When she is east of the Sun,
she shines in the evening just after sunset and
is known as the Evening Star.

Next

Earth is one of the most unique planets in

the solar system!
It is the only planet that has life and liquid
water.
Earth is the only planet to have one large
moon.

Mars
Next

o Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and is the

second smallest planet in the solar system.
o Mars is nicknamed the Red Planet due to its
reddish appearance. This is due to a mineral called
iron oxide that is very common on the planets
surface.
o Only 18 missions to Mars have been successful.
o Pieces of Mars have fallen to Earth. This allowed
scientists to begin studying Mars prior to launching
space missions.

Jupiter
Next

Jupiter is the largest planet. The mass is 300 times

the mass of Earth.
Jupiter is the fifth planet in order from the Sun and is
about 483 million miles from the Sun.
It is made primarily of gases and is therefore known
as a gas giant.
Jupiter has the shortest day of all the planets. It turns
on its axis once every 9 hours and 55 minutes.
Jupiter orbits the Sun once every 11.8 Earth years.

Saturn Next

Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun, and the most
distant that can be seen with the naked eye. Saturn
is the second largest planet in the solar system.
The bright globe of Saturn is surrounded by rings
which may be composed of ice. Three of these rings
are visible from the Earth using a telescope.
Saturn is the flattest planet.
Saturn has 150 moons and smaller moonlets.
Saturn orbits the Sun once every 29.4 Earth years

Uranus Next

Uranus is the seventh planet

from the Sun.
Uranus is tipped over on its
side with an axial tilt of 98
degrees. It is often described
as rolling around the Sun on
its side.
Uranus makes one trip around
the Sun every 84 Earth years.
With minimum atmospheric
temperature of -224C Uranus
is nearly coldest planet in the
solar system

Neptune Next

o Neptune is the eighth planet from the Sun

making it the most distant in the solar
system.
o The atmosphere of Neptune is made of
hydrogen and helium, with some methane.
The methane absorbs red light, which makes
the planet appear a lovely blue.
o Neptune has 14 moons.
o It takes Neptune 165 of our Earth years to
orbit the Sun.
