EXPLORING ³THE FIELD´

Altering Consciousness to Achieve Non-local Awareness

Binaural Beat Technology

The Monroe Institute http://www.monroeinstitute.org

Binaural beating occurs when two coherent sounds of nearly similar frequencies are presented one to each ear.

The brain integrates the two signals, producing a sensation of binaural beating.

Binaural beating originates in the brainstem, in the superior olivary nuclei.

The binaural beat is conveyed from each superior olivary nuclei to the reticular formation, which initiates changes in brainwave activity.

EXPLORING ³THE FIELD´ Altering Consciousness to Achieve Non-local Awareness

Consciousness:
an awareness of the surrounding world, of the self, and of one¶s thoughts and feelings

Conscious awareness, our firstperson experience of reality, is a balance . . .

level of arousal

cognitive content

Altering consciousness involves:
‡ changing the level of arousal, ‡ changing cognitive content, ‡ or both.

Level of Arousal
‡ ‡ ‡ ‡ ‡ Basic Rest Activity Cycle (BRAC) Sleep Cycles Other Ultradian Rhythms Sensory Responses Internal Feedback Loops

The Extended ReticularThalamic Activating System (ERTAS)

The ERTAS is the brain structure responsible for regulating arousal.

Cognitive Content
The cortical attributes of consciousness are the result of:
‡ Social-Psychological Conditioning ‡ Mental Ability

Social-Psychological Conditioning
‡ ‡ ‡ ‡ ‡ ‡ Group Interaction Guided Visual Imagery Affirmation Introspection Reframing etc.

Mental Ability
Cognitive skills can be enhanced through educational processes:

Summary
Used in conjunction with a multidimensional approach of socialpsychological conditioning and education, special binaural beat mixes safely provide access to many beneficial first-person experiences of the surrounding world, of the self, and of one¶s thoughts and feelings.

The Penrose - Hameroff model of "orchestrated objective reduction"

Each tubulin molecule may switch between two (or more) conformations and, it is proposed, each tubulin can also exist in quantum superposition of both conformational states.

The Penrose - Hameroff model of ³orchestrated objective reduction´

Consciousness:
an awareness of the surrounding world, of the self, and of one¶s thoughts and feelings

Consciousness:
A process of events* occurring in a wide, basic field leading to: an awareness of the world, of the self, and of one¶s thoughts and feelings
*These events may be comparable to quantum state reductions (Shimony, 1993).

The Penrose - Hameroff model of ³orchestrated objective reduction´ (Orch OR) proposes that:
‡ Quantum superposition/computation occur in microtubule automata within brain neurons. ‡ Tubulin subunits within microtubules act as qubits, switching between states on a nanosecond (10-9 sec) scale governed by quantum London forces.

‡ Tubulin qubits interact computationally by nonlocal quantum entanglement according to the Schrodinger equation. ‡ Pre-conscious processing continues until the threshold for objective reduction (OR) is reached by E = h/T*.

*E is the gravitational self-energy of the superposed mass separated from itself, h is Planck's constant divided by 2pi, and T is the coherence time until collapse occurs.

‡ At that instant collapse, or OR occurs which is an actual event in fundamental space-time geometry. This event selects a particular configuration of Planck-scale experiential geometry, enacting a ³moment of awareness,´ ³occasion of experience,´ or conscious event. ‡ A sequence of OR events provides a forward flow of subjective time and "stream" of consciousness.

‡ During the pre-conscious quantum superposition/computation phase, tubulin oscillations are ³tuned´ and ³orchestrated´ by microtubuleassociated proteins (MAPs), providing a feedback loop between the biological system and the quantum state (hence Orch OR).

³tuned´ and ³orchestrated´
‡ The normal environmental milieu surrounding critical brain proteins (i.e., receptors, channels, tubulin, etc.) provide for ordinarily occurring London forces, protein conformational dynamics, and the superposition necessary for everyday conscious awareness.

‡ Certain environments (e.g., anesthetic gas molecules) associated with critical brain proteins prevent normally occurring London forces, protein conformational dynamics, and superposition necessary for consciousness. ‡ Other environments promote and sustain superposition, expanding consciousness (e.g., psychedelic hallucinogens).

Geometric Arrays
‡ Consciousness requires a critical degree of quantum coherence in parallel arrayed neuronal microtubules (1018 tubulin electrons). ‡ This critical degree allows a prediction as to what evolutionary level of neural complexity will result in consciousness.

³« geometry is the morphogenic structure behind reality itself, underlying even mathematics. « it is actually shape that generates all the laws of physics.´ Bob Frissell
